Why do black-holes look like that? Light bends around them!  Here's the surprisingly easy-to-understand math behind it...
It's now clear I'm on a Black Hole binge (I can stop when I want, by the way). They're endlessly fascinating. My recent interest was in particular focused on simulating visualizations of the Schwarzschild geometry. I was preoccupied by the problem of generating a decent accurate representation ...

Here's one for the Suzuki violin parents out there, and those of us who grew up playing Suzuki (h/t Beverley Williams & Steven Eckblad)...

After Sam's Suzuki recital yesterday, we both found ourselves humming the same tune that one of the other kids played (from Suzuki Book 2).  When I got home, I realized "Hey, given the composer was Paganini, I wonder what the real version of that tune is?"

Well, thanks to Youtube.com, it wasn't hard to find at all... Two renditions!

As I was told by the receptionist, this is where you go in Boston if you are looking to buy (or get repaired) a $50,000+ violin. If that's not your market, then you might try their more populist subsidiary: Carriage House Violins in Newton.

My personal favorite beer in Boston. The food is generally good (though not really fantastic), but the portions tend to be on the small side.

Dignan does excellent bow work. Among the best (and the most recommended--by those who know) in Boston.

Best Irish Bar in Boston! The Druid has it all: Good beer selection, great food (cooked by an excellent brazilian chef), ONE TV for keeping track of a big game (and it gets turned OFF otherwise--thank god). It's also got a really nice, diverse, and interesting clientele: From construction workers to MIT/Harvard grad students, to software/biotech engineers, to wine sellers, bookstore owners, teachers, playwrights, retired programmers, and other bar owners. Plus, it happens to be the single best place (at the time of writing) to hear or play excellent traditional Irish music.

Excellent food. Quirky, hipster atmosphere. Nuff said.
