Puducherry Policeman

We knew that the police uniforms of Puducherry were unique, especially the hat, and were on the lookout for a policeman on a break that I could photograph. I was nervous about this since I knew that in Los Angeles if you stick your camera in a policeman's face, you'll end up face-down on the pavement with a knee in your back. Such was not the case in this form French territory that is sometimes referred to as the "French Riviera of the East." I carefully approached this policeman and a guide got his permission for me to photograph him. Just as I was raising my lens, his phone rang. I stood there awkwardly for a bit until he gave the "What Are You Waiting For Gesture." I took a single frame, bowed a thank you and ended up with this handsome portrait.

Garland Vendor

Like many of the portraits in the DREAMS of INDIA Collection, this man asked Me to photograph Him, then struck a pose. I love the sense of peace and dignity he has. I still wonder how I was so blessed as to have had so many Indian people ask me to photograph them. If I had known that I was going to be working on a portrait project, I might have chosen a different lens, which I think would be a shame. I look forward to returning to Bharat and continuing this project someday soon. Please?!

Man Playing the Sarangi

As I was looking through images of the Golden Temple for my next blog post, I came across this image in my 180º DREAMS of INDIA Collection. The name Sarangi means "100 Colors" and is said to be the most important bowed instrument of North Indian music. The notes are made by sliding a fingernail against the string instead of pressing it against a fingerboard like a violin. The sound that results from this playing technique sounds hauntingly close to a human voice.

Pilgrim with Prayer Wheel

I photographed this man during the Annual Drukpa Council at the Hemis Monastery in Ladakh, India. Drukpa or Dugpa is an 800-year-old Buddhist sect from Tibet sometimes called the "Red Hat sect." One aspect of the Drukpa Buddhists that I found impressive is the way they engage themselves with the local communities and provide them with their most urgent needs. In practicing the Buddha's teaching this way, they are as they say, "Walking the Talk."

My New Favorite Market

I found this new market just 5 blocks from my house. I guess I won't have to cook Thai food any more. I'm only half way through exploring this food heaven-It's so huge that I got lost. As far as I can see, almost every type of Thai food is on offer, although I've yet to find my Lanna (Northern Thailand) favorites yet.

Man on a Tricycle Rickshaw

Mathura, located in Uttar Pradesh, northern India is renowned as the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Being one of Hinduism's seven holy cities, there are many sadhus, pilgrims, and temples in this picturesque town. While walking through the streets early in the morning, I noticed this man slowly approaching in a tricycle rickshaw. I stood in the street waiting for him and raised my camera to ask for his permission to photograph him. He bobbled his head in the charming way that Indians do to give approval, and I captured this image.

A Look at the Thai New Year Celebrations (I know What You Did Last Songkran)

I know what you did because this year I actually ventured out into the hotbed of water wars, Khao San Road. I chose this popular backpacker haven over Silom as I thought I would have a better chance to capture a fisheye photo in the narrow street. After the 180books team cleared the checkpoint, we found ourselves in the mist of water battles. I had barely entered the area when I made my favorite photo of the day, shown below. Follow the link to see more, plus look at have at a similar springtime festival in India.
