This week I am beginning a Sound Design and animation project for my friend author David Bouchard. I was speaking with Raymond Skye the artist that painted the visuals that I will animate in the presentation yesterday and because he was about to be interviewed for the project he wanted to know what I do. Here’s what I wrote: I add sound design elements to David's voice recordings; sounds that go with the text; it might be a fire or a forest or a river or animals, some synth pads find their way into the mix and flute sounds provided by David. The possibilities presented by the story are many. I create my own library of sounds for each project whenever possible. I like to think of this craft as being similar to the old radio shows; they coined the term theatre of the mind. Although I see my practice more akin to those that worked on Pink Floyd records than old time radio shows. The intent is to take the reader into the story. Recently we have started to include video. With the advent of tablet computing this creates a whole new personal viewing experience and new way to experience a book. I create movement which animates the imagery (such as your paintings for this project). At the same time the words as read by David or the other reader(s) appear on screen for the book's viewer to follow along. There are usually two additional language versions; English, French (read by David) and an aboriginal language. I believe this helps to preserve our indigenous languages and stories and helps those stories to find relevance in the twenty first century. We certainly hear that this helps to create an engaging experience for the books reader.
I have been working with David since 1998 and with this project I am beginning work on my sixteenth with him.
At streamworks.ca I book a limited number of Sound Design projects per year and after all these years I still love the craft. If you are working on a graphic story we should talk.
