DETROIT — Chevrolet Bolt EV is the 2017 North American Car of the Year.

The Bolt EV’s recognition marks the fourth time in four years that Chevrolet has received the North American Car of the Year or Truck of the Year award, following the Corvette Stingray and Silverado’s wins in 2014 and the Colorado’s award in 2015.

Founded in 1994, the NACTOY group is comprised of 60 professional automotive journalists from the United States and Canada who work for magazines, television, radio, newspapers and websites. NACTOY jurors evaluated dozens of new vehicles that went on sale this year before selecting the Bolt EV as the 2017 Car of the Year.

Offering an EPA-estimated 238 miles of range on a full charge at a starting price of $37,495 before federal tax incentives of up to $7,500 depending upon your tax situation, the Bolt EV adds the title of North America Car of the Year to a growing list of independent accolades. Motor Trend® named the Bolt EV the 2017 Car of the Year and it earned a place on the 2017 Car and Driver 10Best Cars list. Green Car Journal also heralded the Bolt EV as the Green Car of the Year and Green Car reports named it the Best New Car to Buy.

DETROIT — On the heels of the signing of the SAVE Act legislation to support autonomous vehicle testing and deployment in Michigan, General Motors will immediately begin testing autonomous vehicles on public roads. GM also announced it will produce the next generation of its autonomous test vehicles at its Orion Township assembly plant beginning in early 2017.

Testing is already underway on GM’s Technical Center campus in Warren, Michigan, and with the passage of the SAVE Act legislation will now expand to public roads on the facility’s outskirts. Within the next few months, testing will expand to metro Detroit, which will become GM’s main location for development of autonomous technology in winter climates.

Workers at the Orion Township assembly plant will build test fleet Bolt EVs equipped with fully autonomous technology. The plant currently manufactures the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Sonic. The new equipment will include LIDAR, cameras, sensors and other hardware designed to ensure system safety, leveraging GM’s proven manufacturing quality standards.

The test fleet vehicles will be used by GM engineers for continued testing and validation of GM’s autonomous technology already underway on public roads in San Francisco and Scottsdale, Arizona, as well as part of the Michigan testing fleet.

DETROIT – Chevrolet adds another industry recognition to its lineup as the 2017 Chevrolet Volt extended range electric vehicle (EREV) earns a 2017 Wards 10 Best Engines Award. This marks the second consecutive year that the Volt has won the award and the third time overall.

Starting at $33,220, the second-generation Volt delivers a unique execution of a two motor drive unit with 294 lb-ft of torque, a 18.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack and an efficient Ecotec 1.5L gasoline range extender. Together, they provide an impressive EPA-estimated 106 MPGe, 53 miles of EV range and 420 miles of total driving range. Since the first-generation Volt came to market, owners have driven about 1.5 billion miles in EV mode, saving about 58 million gallons of gas. Data shows drivers use all-electric power more than 80 percent of the time.

In addition to the award-winning propulsion system, the 2017 Volt offers new, unique, built-in Teen Driver Technology that encourages safe driving habits and lets parents know how their teenager drove the vehicle. Full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward Automatic Braking safety features are also available.

DETROIT — Chevrolet’s first nine-speed automatic transmission makes its debut in the 2017 Malibu and will be available in the 2017 Cruze Diesel and 2018 Equinox, advancing a legacy of multispeed transmissions designed to optimize efficiency, performance and refinement.

The new, General Motors-developed Hydra-Matic 9T50 nine-speed is paired with the available 2.0L Turbo engine in the Malibu, contributing to an EPA-estimated 33 mpg highway — a 3 percent increase over the 2016 model with the eight-speed automatic.

The new nine-speed has a wider 7.6:1 overall ratio — the difference between the first gear ratio and the top gear ratio — compared to the eight-speed transmission, with a “deep” 4.69 first gear that supports excellent off-the-line acceleration and a “tall” 0.62 top gear for low-rpm highway cruising. That balance optimizes acceleration and fuel economy and reduces engine noise during cruising. The new transmission also supports stop/start technology that can help save fuel by allowing the engine to shut down in certain stop-and-go driving conditions.

GM will rapidly deploy the new Hydra-Matic nine-speed automatic transmission as an option on 10 vehicle models by the end of 2017.

DETROIT — The gender gap in technology and engineering is getting worse despite the increased demand for STEM-related jobs. GM and the national nonprofit Girls Who Code (GWC) announced a partnership to inspire and empower thousands of U.S. middle and high school girls to become future leaders in these fields.

Through the GM/GWC partnership, girls from underserved communities will gain increased access to computer science education, sisterhood, mentorship and projects that demonstrate the real-world impact of computing through a model that significantly increases young girls’ interest in pursuing technology and engineering degrees. GM is giving a $250,000 grant to expand GWC’s Clubs programs, which provide free after-school activities in schools, universities and community centers.

To kick off the partnership, GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra and GWC Founder and CEO Reshma Saujani hosted 30 GWC students for activities focused on connectivity, electrification, autonomous and future mobility solutions.

GWC students and GM executives will come together for more activities throughout the year.

DETROIT — General Motors is offering a third round of its successful Take 2 program — 12-week career re-entry internships for experienced technical professionals — in spring 2017.

Paid internships will begin in mid-March and will be available in the following areas: Customer Care and Aftersales (NEW), Global Finance (NEW), Manufacturing (NEW), Global Propulsion Systems, Information Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, and Vehicle Engineering

GM, partnering with the Society of Women Engineers and iRelaunch, is a founding member of the STEM Reentry Task Force, which aims to create a structural change in the STEM sector by introducing the re-entry internship program as a vehicle for engaging with returning technical employees.

Take 2 is an opportunity for professionals with technical backgrounds who took a career break of two or more years and are interested in returning to the workforce. This 12-week “audition” will prepare experienced interns for a full-time career in one of several fields at GM through training, professional development and networking opportunities. GM has extended offers for permanent positions to 85 percent of the past Take 2 interns.

DETROIT — General Motors achieved a record number of landfill-free facilities in 2016, exceeding its commitment four years early. The company now operates 152 global facilities that recycle, reuse or convert to energy all waste from daily operations. These 52 non-manufacturing sites and 100 manufacturing sites contribute to GM’s top and bottom lines by driving efficiencies, generating revenue and saving money.

Altogether, GM recycles or reuses 2 million metric tons of byproducts a year. If someone were to place that material into the beds of Chevrolet Silverado extended-cab pickup trucks and park them end to end, they would stretch around the world.

GM has generated up to $1 billion from recycling in recent years. The company reinvests that money into the business, including the development of fuel-efficient vehicles and new technologies shaping the future of personal mobility. Landfill-free facilities result in greater operational efficiency and eliminate waste-hauling fees. Repurposing waste into vehicle components or plant supplies means the company doesn’t have to buy virgin material.

About a third of GM’s total landfill-free sites are technical centers, warehouses and offices. While in the midst of a major renovation at three Michigan facilities, GM partnered with Herman Miller and Green Standards to repurpose surplus office assets into $1 million of in-kind donations to about 100 Michigan-based community organizations.

DETROIT — The 2017 Buick Envision AWD compact SUV has earned a five-star overall vehicle score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) — an accolade achieved by every Buick model rated for two consecutive model years.

Earlier this year, the Envision also earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) best possible rating, a 2016 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) when equipped with optional front crash prevention. Today that rating was extended into the 2017 calendar year as the Envision with optional front crash prevention and high intensity discharge (HID) headlights was named a 2017 IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

The Envision offers customers an extensive list of standard and available safety features, both active and passive. These safety technologies utilize a combination of five cameras and 13 radar and ultrasonic sensors around the vehicle to help offer owners peace of mind behind the wheel. Envision also features a robust body structure that incorporates extensive use of mass-reducing high-strength steel.

The new Buick Envision arrived at dealers in North America this summer and is off to a quick start with more than 10,000 retail sales to date. The average Envision spends just over 30 days on a dealer’s lot, less than half of the industry average.
