Suggestions on How to relieve Dry Mouth from LiveStrong.com
1) Sometimes a saliva stimulant can be very effective for patients who have retained some salivary gland function. Certain products such as sugar-free candy or gum can stimulate the salivary glands to help produce saliva. The Oral Cancer Foundation recommends eating carrots or celery. Sucking on a cherry or olive pit can help as well. *
2) Over-The-Counter Saliva Substitutes:
Saliva substitutes do no aid in saliva production, but rather provide moisture for the oral cavity by mimicking the action of saliva. Saliva substitutes come as rinses, sprays, gels or lozenges. It is also very important to drink plenty of water while eating to facilitate chewing and swallowing.
3) Prescription Medications:
Doctors can prescribe medications to stimulate salivary glands. Examples include pilocarpine and cevimeline which act on the nervous system to stimulate the salivary glands to secrete saliva. They will also stimulate the eyes to produce more tears.

* My patients have reported GREAT success by sucking on an olive pit!
