The right to protect ourselves is indeed fundamental. But the right to free speech is constitutionally first in order by design. So in the founding father's reasoning, free speech is more powerful than weapons. They were right. You can stop more killing with communication and understanding than you can prevent violence through superior firepower. When people understand each other, the entire basis for violence is impacted so significantly, the violence and the guns that inevitably make it into that violent arena, simply never arise.
It's like the old saying dads used to give their sons on their wedding day. Communication is the key to a successful relationship.
