- support for Java 9 and Jigsaw modules,
- experimental support for type functions on the JVM,
- reduced run-time dependencies for your Ceylon program,

In which I reluctantly conclude that it's quite difficult to condemn a group of people who believe that armed insurrection is a morally defensible response to half-decade prison sentences for acts that were (a) non-violent (b) unintentional and (b) caused no harm any person. Mandatory minimum sentences have destroyed countless lives, and made a mockery of the notion of justice, but America's political class has shown little interest getting rid of them.
A federal judge rejected mandatory minimums for Dwight and Steven Hammond as unconstitutional; an appeals court disagreed.

+Todd Sproule Whether the mainstream media is hypocritical is of utterly zero interest to me since I long ago stopped paying any attention to it. And I don't think I'm letting my biases show here. Sure, these protests are being viewed by a certain kind of simpleton as "right wing", and that's coloring the response to them from both left and right. But, FTR, I don't condemn leftist Black Lives Matter protestors either, even though I think that their tactics (property crimes against private businesses in their own neighborhoods) are almost certainly counter-productive, and that their analysis of the problem (that police brutality is primarily a result of racism) is substantially mistaken.

If one is skeptical of state power, one is inclined to defend those who resist its misapplication, whether the resistors identify with one's own "team" or not.

Important study explores the effects of patriarchy and lack of positive female role models in non-human cultures.
SAN DIEGO—According to a University of California–San Diego study, females creatures in the wild are excluded from pack activities.

#Ceylon is now compatible with Java 9 and Jigsaw!
Everyone is talking about modules these days. New languages try to incorporate them, and older languages try to retrofit them in. Which is great news, because modules are essential. Java 9 is around the corner, because it's supposed to come out next year, and the really big new feature is ...

How to handle "failure" in #Ceylon, with exceptions and union types.
In all programming languages, we need to deal with operations than can "fail": a pure function might fail to produce a result, or; an impure function might fail to produce its desired side-effect (create a new file, or whatever). In neither case can we just blindly continue with the rest of the ...

The humiliation of the PSUV in the recent parliamentary elections may not save Venezuela from hyperinflation and economic collapse. (Oh, and Spanish readers, please note: when Maduro decided to double down on suicidal idiocy, he brought in a Catalan economist linked to Podemos to help him out with that. One in five of ya'll just voted for a party whose policies would take Spain down the path of Venezuela and Argentina. You guys really aren't thinking this through.)
With Luis Salas's appointment as economics Vice-president, the radicals have won a decisive victory in the fight to dictate economic policy. Their ascent could mean the deepening of the economic crisis and the descent into hyperinflation, hastening the end of Maduro as well.

Yet more evidence that Franz Kafka was the prophet of our times. It is impossible to comprehend modern society if one has not read The Trial.
The term kafkatrapping describes a logical fallacy that is popular within gender feminism, racial politics and other ideologies of victimhood. It occurs when you are accused of a thought crime such as sexism, racism or homophobia. You respond with an honest denial, which is then used as further confirmation of your guilt. You are now trapped in a circular and unfalsifiable argument; no one who is accused can be innocent because the structure of k...

Bottom line: so-called "organic" farming is more harmful to the environment and offers no plausible health benefits. Consumption of "organic" produce is, however, a rather efficient form of social status signaling.

Caring socialist threatens to take retribution on the poor: "I wanted to build 500 thousand homes next year. Right now I'm doubting. But not because I can't build them. I can build them. But I asked for your support and you didn't give it to me."

It's already all over for Chavismo. The only interesting questions are (1) how much more damage they can do on their way out, and (2) whether the divided opposition can form an effective governing force given the corruption and weakness of Venezuela's institutions after 16 years of these wreckers.
