Where to start? Not at the beginning, if you want to know more about my 5m swimming achievements get in touch!
In 1998 I graduated from Cardiff University with a degree in Civil Engineering. Whilst studying in Cardiff I had a part time job with ASDA where the retail bug took hold of me. Looking after customers, working with a team to deliver results and facing in to a never ending series of challenges inspired me to make a career defining decision. ASDA approached me and asked me to join their graduate management scheme. How could I resist joining the pocket tapping retail juggernaut.
8 great years of retail management followed. My time with ASDA, managing various departments, setting up and managing the recruitment and training centre for managers in South Wales and finally looking after the entire food side of the business in a Cardiff store allowed me to fine tune my leadership skills. It was here that I developed my style of getting things done by empowering the team and creating an environment that allows every person to be the best that they can be. More importantly my pocket tapping skills improved with each year.
On turning 30 I had an opportunity to expand my leadership skills further after being head hunted by Barclays Bank. I spent 4 years with Barclays managing 4 of their branches in the Bridgend area of South Wales (all at the same time!!). As one of only a handful of managers recruited from outside the banking industry I was able to offer a very different approach putting the customer at the forefront of what we did, not just looking after the money! Again this provided me with a great opportunity to further develop my leadership style, and learn new skills. One of the highlights of my career with Barclays was developing the thickest skin on the planet following the banking crisis and instantly becoming one of the most loathed people in the local community!
In 2010 I was finally persuaded to join the family business and take over the management of the Heath Vets. This has been a great opportunity to bring the skills I developed with both ASDA and Barclays to the veterinary world. During the past few years we have embarked on a transformational journey to make Heath Vets the leading veterinary practice in South Wales. In the first 2 years we achieved the Investors In People award, were accredited on the Practice Standards Scheme and opened our 4th Surgery. As well as these very tangible results we have also embraced the social media phenomenon and continue to lead the way with our online marketing. The team has grown and we have a clear succession plan with great opportunities for development. In 2014 I made another big decision and bought into Heath Vets, a scary moment but owning part of something special is a great feeling.
I have recently set up a company called VetProtect Ltd that provides a unique healthcare scheme for pets not only providing preventative healthcare but an insurance policy covering injury and illness. Our aim is to provide the best possible healthcare at an affordable price for clients throughout the UK. This has to be the most exciting project I have ever been involved with, the culture of the veterinary world is about to change forever.
I have decided to share some of my experiences and knowledge in my new blog called ‘The Litter Tray’. Here I provide ‘Tiny clumps of solid advice for Veterinary Practice Managers’. Hope you like the name, Top dog and Purrfect management were just a bit too corny.
If you are looking for some help with leadership, give me a call or drop me a line, always ‘Happy to Help’ (ASDA will never leave me). I could even teach you to pocket tap or just share the leadership secrets of the world’s biggest retailer, one of the highest profile banks in the world and the greatest veterinary practice I have ever managed.
