'Welcome to Planet Trona - Helicopter Light Painting'

Once you've done light painting via helicopter, there's no going back.

The gorgeous side light that you see on the left of each pinnacle was lit perfectly by a helicopter shining its search light down on the scene before me.

Quite what they were doing there I have no clue, but I made sure I was ready with the shutter button once I saw them scanning the area with their powerful beam.

The helicopter appeared to land in the park so we steeled ourselves for the appearance of commandos, fully expecting to be told there'd been an alien craft landing nearby.

We did after all witness a huge fireball about 2 minutes before seeing the chopper.

This is the kind of crap that runs through your mind while shooting the Trona Pinnacles in the dead of night. Such a creepy place.

'The Galactic Throne' - Light Painting, Trona Pinnacles

What a place. The Trona Pinnacles in California will send shivers down your spine.

During the day, its pleasantly odd. During a moonless night things take on another dimension and become downright eerie.

Needless to say though, we had fun dodging ant hills and looking for snakes. We saw a kit fox on the way home so that was a bonus.

To create this image I had to shoot about 10 different exposures while light painting each pinnacle and then the foreground.

Normally I remove the light streaks caused by my movement but I liked the way this light streak framed my model so I decided to leave it in.

I'll be publishing an article on this technique very soon so please join my mailing list if you'd like to know how it's done via my blog www.fototripper.com

Shot with the Sony A7R.

'Core Piercer' - Bandon Beach, Oregon

This was a tricky one to shoot. There was a half moon that was messing with my exposure of the Milky Way so I had to wait for that to set.

Then I was struggling with the super harsh street lights that gave the sea stacks that vivid orange glow.

After that I had to time the tide just right in order to capture the reflections.

Finally, fogs kept rolling in and out making this one of the most tedious shoots of all time.

I loved every minute of it. The final shot happened at 2AM and it was time to go to bed.

Sony A7R with the Canon 16-35mm lens at f/2.8 for 30" using ISO 3200.

Enjoy.

Light painting in the Alabama Hills with the Sony A7R.
We just got back from shooting ay Mobius arch in the Alabama Hills of California and this was one of my fave shots. I've no idea if this looks any good because I processed it on my crappy laptop so please let me know if the colours are weird. The model is my wife 'Pops'.

If you've ever wanted to improve your photographic composition, I highly recommend reading the 'Visual Flow' E-book by award winning photographer Ian Plant. Now available in the Fototripper store.
I got my hands on a copy of the ‘Visual Flow’ e-book by award winning photography Ian Plant and I thought I’d post a review with my thoughts. The ‘Visual Flow – Mastering the Art of Composition’ e-book focuses purely on composition in photography and I think it’s a MUST read for photographers of all levels.

Thank you for posting your tutorial. I will watch for it. Actually, right now I'm being trained in night photography through Matador U. It has been my hardest photography genre, as I am a morning person. :)

Even when you have to endure the landscape photographers nightmare of 'zero clouds', it's always worth sticking around when you're at a location like Mono Lake.

From our recent trip to Southern Cali to shoot the milky way - wait till you see those shots.

Enjoy.

Shot with the Sony A7R using a Canon 16-35mm lens.

5" exposure at f/16 on ISO 50.

Time for a new profile pic. That last one was from my thirties. Now a distant memory.

I'm pleasantly suprised at the specs of the new Sony A7R II which features more resolution and 4K video like the Sony A7S. This looks to be a beast.

You're right Jerome, 4:2:0 sampling at 8-bit internally. I'd love to get my hands on some files to check the quality out.
