Cleaning it up!

Montreal is a great city to visit - especially during the summer, and more so around June-July when there is the great Jazz festival going on.

Walking around the old town is fun. Biking is even more so!

Le Carrousel in Bryant Park. New York City.

From http://www.bryantpark.org/things-to-do/le_carrousel.html :
Le Carrousel in Bryant Park, specially created to complement the park's French classical style, is an homage to both European and American traditions. Its fourteen delightful animals, replicas of classic carousel creatures, revolve to the sounds of French cabaret music. The rounding boards, inspired by Bryant Park's elegant baroque-style torchères along 40th Street, blend into the leafy canopy of the park's plane trees.

While Tying His Turban, Marwari Falls Into Cooum
MADRAS. Jan. 4.

A Marwari gentleman, Tilak Chuand, aged 25, is reported to have seated himself on the parapet of the Cooum bridge opposite the Stanley Viaduct to tie his turban. While doing so, he accidently toppled into the river. A constable attached to the Flower Bazar Poice jumped into the river and rescued him. He took him to the General Hospital at once, where he is said to be progressing.

SASTRI CREATES A SCENE
(FREE PRESS OF INDIA)
KUMBAKONAM. Jan. 1.

The citizens of Kumbakonam mustered strong in the Gandhi Park on Friday evening to register their demand in favour of tempie entry by Harijans. Mr. G. S Aravamuthan Iyengar, retired Head Master of the Victoria High School, Papanasam, presided.

A resolution was unanimously passed urging the Viceroy and the Madras Government to accord sanction to the temple entry Bills of Dr. Subbaroyan and Mr. C. S. Renga Iyer. There was not a single dissentient in the audience.

The resolution was communicated to the authorities by wire.

CRY OF "SAVE ME"

At the close of the public meeting. a young Valdlk Shastrl was seen running towards the platform in somewhat nervous state crying out "Ivengar, Iyengar, save me." Mr. Chakravarthi Iyengar (a Congressman of the place) asked him what was the matter and why he was so much agitated. The Shastriar with trembling lips and terror stricken face related a most interesting episode in which himself and his father were involved. He said. "Look here. I am whole heartedly in favour of temple entry by Harijans and so I signed the referendum book. My rather got scent of this and grew angry. "Get away you impudent fellow" he cried out at the top or his voice. "You ought not to enter my house unless you go and strike out the signature." “Please give me the register and save me."

Mr. Chokravarthi asked whether he signed of his own accord or out of compulsion. To this the Shastri replied that he was entirely in favour of the movement and so signed only out of free will. Nobody compelled him to do so. He was only afraid of his father. It may be stated here that the “boy” who is afraid oi his father is aged about 30 being himself the rather of two children. Seeing this pitiabie plight the book was brought to him and he was allowed to strike out his signature.

I have lost count of how many times I have sat on this chair! This graph shows how long Ikea has been selling it and how the price has changed!

The Poäng’s midcentury-modern forebear was the Finnish designer Alvar Aalto’s 1939 creation called simply armchair 406, which had its own bent-birch frame, swooping arms and thin tan upholstery. The Poäng’s design was first sold decades later, in 1978, after a collaborationbetween Lars Engman and Noboru Nakamura. Nakamura, in a company brochure celebrating his chair’s 40th anniversary, said that even though trends and fashion influence what he designs, “all products should have a timeless value.”

As if one messiah salesman wasn't enough for the silicone valley.
In a searing investigation into the once lauded biotech start-up Theranos, Nick Bilton discovers that its precocious founder defied medical experts—even her own chief scientist—about the veracity of its now discredited blood-testing technology.

JUROR WHO DOESN’T KNOW ENGLISH
(FREE PRESS OF INDIA)
PATNA, Jane 5.

Proceedings of an unusual nature opened at the Patana High Court yesterday following the direction at the Privy Council in a Criminal appeal wherein seven were sentenced to death by the Patna sessions.

During the hearing of the appeal in the High Court, an affidavit was filed to the effect that one juror was ignorant of English and therefore was incapable of understanding the Counsel's charge and the Judge's address. The high court made enquiries and found that the information was based on heresy and could not be relied upon.

Thereafter the affidavit was filed by a pleader of the District Court professing direct knowledge and supporting the same. The allegation was filed, but being too late no action was taken. The Privy Council directed the enquiry upon the second affidavit.
