Today our prayers go out to the families of the police officers who were killed & wounded by a snipper attack in Dallas, Texas last night. It is difficult to understand how such a tragedy can occur in our country. In our disbelief, we are lost at how to respond when a tragedy of this proportion happens. We do need to understand what we can do to help these things not happen in the future, but, it’s not a simple answer. Ephesians 6: 10-12 helps us understand what is going on at a deeper level. "Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we[ are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” Our battle is not against people, but against the spiritual forces of evil in this world. What are we to do? Ephesians 6: 13-20 continues by telling us be prepared to do spiritual battle "Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. And pray for me, too. Ask God to give me the right words so I can boldly explain God’s mysterious plan that the Good News is for Jews and Gentiles alike. I am in chains now, still preaching this message as God’s ambassador. So pray that I will keep on speaking boldly for him, as I should." So How should we respond to the Dallas police tragedy? 1) put on the full armor of God by spending time in God’s Word and living in it’s truth. 2) Pray at all times, pray for the victims and their families in this terrible tragedy. 3) Be ready to share the hope you have in Jesus Christ with those who are hurting around you. Lastly 4) Romans 12:14-16 "Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them. Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!"
In the midst of the storm going on in the world around us, we have the hope and peace that comes from knowing Christ personally and we can share those around us what we have and what they are desperate to have. Take this as an opportunity to point those around to the hope found in Jesus Christ alone.
