The Surprising Gut Microbes of African Hunter-Gatherers

The Hadza gut microbiome has an entirely unique combination of bacteria from any western population, or rural African population, that’s been sampled,” said co-author Alyssa Crittenden..

Many of the bacteria are species that the researchers had never seen before. And even familiar microbes were present in unusual levels in the Hadza belly. “The Hadza not only lack the ‘healthy bacteria,’ and they don’t suffer from the diseases we suffer from, but they also have high levels of bacteria that are associated with disease,” Crittenden said.

In Western Tanzania tribes of wandering foragers called Hadza eat a diet of roots, berries, and game. According to a new study, their guts are home to a microbial community unlike anything that's been seen before in a modern human population -- providing, perhaps, a snapshot of what the human gut microbiome looked like before our ancestors figured out how to farm about 12,000 years ago.

TheWeek.com: Why don't different species have sex more often? http://google.com/newsstand/s/CBIwp_qbqBo

Looking at packrats, they can but don't often. Maybe they just aren't that into each other. Differences divide. And if they did interbreed, we'd probably stop treating them as different groups.

I am an introvert. And can be grumpy.

Outgoing behavior makes for happier humans: Across cultures, extroverts have more fun

Happy is as happy does, apparently -- for human beings all over the world. Not only does acting extroverted lead to more positive feelings across several cultures, but people also report more upbeat behavior when they feel free to be themselves.

I find the block chain concept more interesting than bitcoin itself. Maybe a "cheap" authority for SSL, domain names. Even some sort of delegation of real identity. DRM perhaps.

As long as governments demand taxes in their own particular currencies, and use those currencies to pay for staff and services, then I don't see a big need for bitcoin as currency. I can see it in a role for PayPal type payments service, with low exchange and transaction costs, especially for small payments.

Bitcoin 2.0: Unleash The Sidechains

Sidechains are new blockchains which are backed by Bitcoins, via Bitcoin contracts, just as dollars and pounds used to be backed by cold hard gold. You could in principle have thousands of sidechains “pegged” to Bitcoin, all with different characteristics and purposes … and all of them taking advantage of the scarcity and resilience guaranteed by the main Bitcoin blockchain, which in turn could iterate to implement experimental sidechain features once they have been tried and tested.

Software developer, Sydney Australia
Introduction
I'm a software developer, specializing in Oracle database technologies.

I live in Pennant Hills, a suburb in north-west Sydney, Australia with my wife and kids.

I was born and raised in England, and I still prefer an ale at room temperature over a lager from the fridge.

I'll post public content that interests me ranging from Australian current affairs to media tidbits to reviews of books I enjoy.

I'll post Oracle techie bits to the Sydney Oracle Meetup community (and any other relevant Oracle community that takes off).

I generally don't follow people who mostly post photos. I generally don't follow people without profile data (because I don't know what circle to put them in). CircleCount says about two thirds of the people in my circles are male. I am trying to redress that imbalance (but failing).

I'm on the committee of the Sydney Oracle Meetup. Message me if you are interested.

I play a passable game of "Words With Friends". Feel free to invite me to a game (username sydoracle)

I do like the Armory. Swathes of open grassland, the curious bunkers and building surrounded by earthworks. Concrete paths if you prefer. The electric train goes around on Sundays, but I was there on Good Friday, so missed that. One of the buildings houses a small art gallery. There's one big cafe and a smaller kiosk place for coffee, cold drinks, pies etc. It's next to Blaxland Park which has 'bits' for the kids. The drawback is that, while the Armoury grounds was pretty quiet, the rest was *heaving*. Even though they've expanded the car park, it was still overflowing. Apparently it had filled up by 11am. If you are going, aim to be there earlier than that.

Spent an enjoyable few hours here today. There are several main mazes, which aren't particularly big and would only take ten to fifteen minutes each. There are also several 'puzzle' mazes based around following arrows or basic sums. These are physically small, but actually take longer to do as you have to think a lot more to get to the finish. One of the "maze-mates" who was passing gave us a few tips on one of the more challenging ones. There's a variety of animals around, including a couple of emus, some alpacas, rabbits and lots of chickens. A lot of the latter seem to live in a Fort Denison themed house. There's wraps and other food available, but we'd taken sandwiches so only had milkshakes. As such we can't comment on the food.
