Hi, I've just written a guide to getting Skype running on a Chromebook. I've tried to take some of the more tricky steps out of the process and hope it will be the easiest way of running Skype, until Microsoft sort out a web only version.

I've tried this on my Chromebooks and was hoping that someone in this community could trial the process for me. If you do, can you let me know if there is anything in the description which is unclear or doesn't work for you.

Thanks. Gary
OK, let’s get the obvious out of the way. Why would you want to use Skype on a Chromebook, when Hangouts exists??? Google devotees don’t always understand that regular folk don’t use Hangouts as they’ve only just got used to Skype. Like it, or not, Skype is the king of internet comms. Because it was one of the first VOIP…

+Gary Judge I tried to load the unpacked extension on my HP Chromebook 14 but I get the following error:

Failed to load extension from: ~/Downloads/Skype
'import' extension is not installed.

Does anyone know if it's possible to buy Acer 15" Chromebook with 1080p display in the UK?

+Ben Miller wrote a great article about sending text messages from a Chromebook using Pushbullet. A top tip indeed.
How would you like to send and receive SMS text messages from your Chromebook? Interested? Read on. Short Message Service (SMS) or text messages have been around since the dawn of mobile phones. To this day, they are still king for brief text-based conversations. Now, thanks to a clever piece of software called ‘Pushbullet,’ it is possible to send new…

Been using Pushbullet for a while, it's awesome.

One could also use Google Voice with Hangouts to do the same thing (if you're a Sprint customer you can use your wireless number as your Google Voice number and send/receive texts and calls using Hangouts).

▶ Chromecast Devices  -

+Ben Miller wrote an article about using Chromecast in a hotel room. For something that should be easy, hotels seem to want to make their customers lives harder than they need to be.

Are you using a Chromecast whilst travelling around? If so, what's your experience?

A 13" screen in my lap is better than the standard 32-37" hotel TV at the end of the bed. Why bother?

This is not exclusively a Chromebook tip, but if you are an information worker that uses Skype, Lync, Hangouts and / or conference calls, then this might be up your street.

I've written this article as I've been using the Jabra 510 for about six weeks now and find that it has massively improved my comfort whilst working with others.

On top of it being a spiffing conference speakerphone for your mobile device, it also plays nice with ChromeOS. This shouldn't be much of a surprise as it is part of the Chrome video conferencing solution.

If you are suffering from rubbish audio quality, or ear-ache from too much time with a mobile in your ear then I suggest you give this a look.
Many information workers these days will be accustomed to spending hours on the phone, Skype, Lync, Hangouts or part of conference calls. The need to stay connected and collaborate is still ever present, despite workers being distributed across the globe. For the last month I’ve drastically improved my setup by adding a Jabra 510 Speakerphone into the mix. After much…

Connecting a better quality mic to a Chromebook may be much easier than you thought. This can be great for hangouts or capturing decent quality audio on the go.

I wrote this article about my USB mic and Chromebook 2 to show others what to do and demonstrate the marked improvement in quality.
This article shows you how to connect a USB Microphone to Chromebook for higher quality audio recording. Great for Hangouts, Podcasting and Screen Recording.

Has anyone experience of Chromebooks / boxes saving the day / their bacon? I'm sure there are some cool anecdotes relating to pending deadlines, broken computers and relying on ChromeOS to make things good out there.

Let us know if you have a tale to tell...

Morning, I'm looking for a vector editor that will work on my Tosh CB2. It must be able to open / import and edit Adobe Illustrator files, but doesn't need to be too fancy.

Please let me know if you've got any suggestions. Cheers.

My colleague +Ben Miller  wrote this great article about using your Chromecast in a hotel room. On the surface, Chromecast is perfect for this task as it's easy to slip in your bag. Unfortunately this is not as easy as it sounds as hotel Wifi connection often requires you to go through some form of connection process...

Ben offers three solutions for would-be hotel casters and weighs up the pros and cons of each. HTH

I've yet to encounter this misguided monetization approach but to those whom are, why not vote with your money? Immediately let the management know you won't be staying with them again on your next visit due to this consumer unfriendly practice. Still better yet, inquire if they use HDMI blocking in their rooms prior to making a reservation and then decline to make it. And with time this sort of thing just goes away. If you want change you gotta let'em know...

I wrote this short article about connecting your Chromecast to a VGA projector. This may be a bit specialised for some, but the technique is useful for businesses and schools that want to use CC with older equipment.
Connecting a Chromecast to VGA Projector is pretty easy with the right bits. This article shows you how, so that you can make use of an older projector. HDMI to VGA The Chromecast is HDMI dongle which usually plugs directly into a HDMI socket. But if you only have VGA ports then you need something that will convert the signal.…
