This blog post is great. Very good descriptions of both work environments from what I know about them. I'm happy at IBM, but his observations are spot on. Every day I'm bombarded with buzzword jargon, for example. :O) I think part of the reason I'm happy at IBM is that I like the challenge of fighting the bullshit and helping make others' lives easier, and I'm not alone in that. As he says, there are good people at IBM, and they deserve the infrastructure to do their jobs well. I would say, though, that part of the reason for the IBM heap of tools are the many acquisitions and gobs of platforms to support. And, legacy, legacy, legacy.
While I wouldn't say that Google has everything right on frictionless tooling internally....at least not for tech writers, I can say that I very much agree with the sentiment on the day-to-day time losses that IBM's internal tooling, support systems and infrastructure caused. Small things like 3-4 year old Thinkpads that would take 20 minutes to reboot were so frustrating and the machine's poor performance problem cost a significant amount during its life.
