I'm reading The Praise of Folly, and my edition has a lot of footnotes that start with Adag.

What's Adag.?

Happify Activity Task: Slice of My Life

So, as part of my Happify experiment, I get to share an extremely vivid memory from my childhood - and respond to anyone that comments.

Here goes:

Our school bus route had about a dozen stops. Most of the children got on the bus at the first four stops, and they nearly always each took one seat each. By the time the bus reached our stop, we were the ones that had to "ask" to sit next to somebody.

One day, my brother and I decided we would go up a couple of stops, to get our seats early. You know, so that we could chose the seat and be the ones to "authorize" someone to sit next to us. Optimally, this would be a seat in the last three rows of the bus. I think it was the last rows so that we were extra far from the bus driver, but I'm not certain.

It wasn't a far walk, and it was a beautiful day. A chinook had come through and melted the ice off the roads. It was still well above freezing, even though the wind had quieted during the night. It was a straight stretch of road, so the bus would be clearly visible for all but the very first stop (where Tim Bell and his sister got on)

We made it to first stop before ours without a problem. There were only a new kids there, mostly ones we played with.

We chose to try for the next one, as we still had a good 10 minutes before the bus was supposed to arrive.

Success at the reaching the second point, this time with a few of the kids that we didn't like as much, fed our drive to go even farther.

Unfortunately, as we neared that third stop, the kids there decided they didn't want to have any of the kids from the later stops join them. We were greeted with a hail of stones, cuss-words, and general animosity.

As we turned back to settle at the second point, some of the kids there had seen us rebuffed, so they decided we didn't deserve to get on the bus at their stop either.

We ended up boarding the bus at the second stop, mostly because the bus had caught up to them.

I don't know how much of this my brother remembers, there might be more to the story. This is what I remember.

Oh, I re-read this, and here's a few additional items that my help you, the reader, with the scene.

This takes place in late March, at the Agency, on the Ft. Belknap Indian Reservation in the northern plains of Montana. The bus would reach our stop around 7:24 AM, so our walk started about half hour after sunrise. If you map it, the bus would come down what is labeled as 1st street, and we lived on what is labeled as Hopi St. ( 48.483603, -108.766975 )

Thanks, and remember, part of this assignment is for me to respond to comments.
