Magic Mirror

This is one of the many reasons that I love my job as a developer. Not only can I create cool things for other people, but some of the most amazing things I have made, I have made just for me :). For example, one of my most useful apps is an internal one that helps Jake and I out on a day to day basis. Our users would have zero use for this type of application, but for us, it is invaluable.

This project though, could be one of my most fun to date. I made a "Magic Mirror", powered by a Raspberry Pi. It is just a normal mirror, but with some added bonus content... I put a computer monitor behind a piece of one-way mirror glass, built a frame, then created a pretty simple javascript and php based webpage to display content behind the mirror. In it's current state, the mirror will show me the time, date, weather information and forecast, an RSS news feed, my calendar, a list of compliments depending on the time of day (cause every mirror should compliment you!), and my current notifications on my phone.

All i have to do is point the Raspberry Pi to the webpage, and it shows my information. Works completely without user interaction on startup as well, just plug it in and it will find the wifi and display the page.

One drawback is that it is a bit heavier than I initially thought it would be, meaning mounting it could be a pretty major issue. This baby might just have to sit on a table somewhere...

Unfortunately with this one, I can't end with "hope you enjoy my work!" Being a developer opens up a world of possibilities if you look outside the box a bit and are willing to learn. If this kind of thing interests you, then please, go out and learn a bit about coding- it can be pretty fun! There are so many resources available and people to help you. I really love how this project turned out and it is quite the statement/conversation piece for any room if you are into that sort of thing ;)

We are ready to submit a reconsideration request but the 'Manual Actions' entry has disappeared in WMT with no explanation..?
