The story of the cannonball is one of the most peculiar and interesting in the Hotel's history. In the year 1845 when the British Army used the Galle Face Green for artillery practices, a 30-pound cannonball was misfired from the southern ramparts of the Colombo Fort and crashed into the Galle Face House, before coming to rest under a chair, luckily failing to damage nothing other than the roof and the floor upon which it landed.
To celebrate this moment in our history, an annual competition is held between two well noted personalities. The competitors have to run from the vicinity of the cannon to the hotel, with the first to lay their hands on the cannonball crowned the winner of the Galle Face Hotel – Cannonball Run.

Sri Lankan cuisine packs an abundance of flavour which is derived through a range of spices. Though at times a handful, it also has the capacity to tailor to the more timid eater. Rice is an ever-present antidote to these big flavors but variations on types of curry depend on which part of the Island you are in.
