Probiotic flora, scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms that are believed to provide health benefits when consumed. Saccharomyces boulardii (red) is sometimes used as a probiotic with the purpose of introducing beneficial active yeast cultures into the large and small intestine, as well as conferring protection against pathogenic microorganisms in the host, while Lactobacillus (pink/purple) may be taken for general digestive and urinogenital problems. . . . Bacterial culture from the umbilicus (belly button). Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of #bacteria on a #skin cell from the umbilicus. Researchers found that the average umbilicus contains 67 different types of bacteria. The commonest types include species of Staphylococci, Corynebacteria, Actinobacteria, Clostridiales, and Bacilli, which accounted for almost 50 percent of the bacteria in the samples. There are around 1000 species of bacteria from 19 phyla found on human skin. Skin flora is usually non-pathogenic, and either commensal (not harmful to their host) or mutualistic (offer a benefit). . . Human skull and site of pituitary gland. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of a side view of the normal skull of a 32-year-old woman, with the site of the pituitary gland (purple and yellow) shown with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. The site of the pituitary gland is known as the sella turcica. It is a region within the skull just behind the eyes. It consists of the part of the sphenoid bone, and partially encloses the endocrine system's pituitary gland (hypophysis), a key gland that regulates many metabolic processes. . . This is a scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the scales in the area between the eyes of a small fly. The sensory hairs and bristles on a fly help it to sense movement in the surrounding air. . . . https://buff.ly/2vFjLEj Microscope footage of the polychaete worm Pygospio elegans. This is a marine bristle worm that inhabits sand and mud in coastal regions of the northeastern Atlantic, as well as the Mediterranean Sea and north Pacific. It inhabits a tube in the substrate, and extends its body and head from the tube to feed on detritus and smaller animals. It is known for its incredible ability to regenerate, and a worm cut in half may develop into two complete new worms. It can reach a length of around 15 millimetres. Sample collected from Dale, Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK. Filmed with darkfield illumination. . .
