So I've been trying out a new-ish game that's still in Closed Beta called Warframe. Cool Game! Been having a lot of fun so far, it runs smoothly on my somewhat old system under top settings. The combat is tight and the visuals are fantastic.
However I have some annoyances. I'll detail them here:
(If any of you think I'm in error here, please point it out and we can discuss!)
What I like is that like Hellgate: London, it's a co-op game. No PVP, no deathmatches or worrying that some jerk is gonna gank you.
However it is very much a pay-to-win, or at least at the present stage it's at. You get a set amount of respawns (a phenomenally stupid concept) and if you use those up... by dying to tougher content or your team abandoning you (which does happen) the only way you can buy more charges is by using the currency that you need RMT cash to buy.
There are two forms of currency, besides parts and materials that you cannot trade, Credit and Platinum. Credit is earned by going through missions and doing well, Platinum has to be bought.
You get a total of 4 respawns per every 24 hours.
If you die beyond that you have the option of sticking around in observer mode and getting zero credit at the mission's completion (I died 3/4 in to one and stuck around, thinking I'd at least get partial credit for my participation), forfeiting the mission and going back to the solar system overview map, which serves as the game lobby, or rolling back a progression level (lose XP).
So that annoys me. Another annoyance is that people make the argument that since it's competitive, not PVP gameplay that it isn't truly pay-2-win. However I must counter that if progression (earning credits and XP for upgrades) is based on performance, then the people that use RMT to buy better weapons, unlock the full extent of your skill tree (elite abilities require RMT) and purchase new warframes are at a distinct advantage to free players or players that only buy cosmetic items.
See, I'd be fine with it were it not that the end-of-mission leader-board wasn't based on a flat percentage of overall participation, then skewed by damage done. Say I go in with a partner that's the same level I am, using the same warframe but I'm using XP/Credit weapons and abilities and he's in Cash Shop gear. It's a recon/spy mission, so he's carrying the data cluster, reducing him to one-hand operation weapons where's I can still use my long-rifle, and I take point to defend him so that we can both complete the mission successfully. Neither of us die and all enemies are destroyed. So the leader-board at the end of the mission displays his damage as 59% and mine at 32%.
Now, I like playing defensive/support roles, but I don't like being screwed, especially when the game is standing in my way of playing the team roles I truly enjoy. And therein lies another point. You get the option of three frames directly after the tutorial, none of which I'm interested in playing. If you want to select the frame that supports the role you actually want to take, you either have to do a weeks-long dungeon grind that relies heavily on RNG to get the parts to craft a new frame, and when you do get the materials, crafting takes 24 hours of real time, or you use RMT and you can buy a new frame immediately.
Or I can just play a game like Forsaken World where I get to pick a Priest or Support Melee immediately without paying a dime, and then accessorize through the cash shop, which I don't mind at all since cosmetics don't affect my moral compunctions in the least.
