Photo of the Day - July 10th, 2014 - +Cameron Siguenza

We're smack dab in the middle of our summer here in the northern hemisphere, which means that all sorts of surfers are thrashing on the waves. We are particularly fond of Camera's use of his reverse grad ND and polarizer filters to get this golden hour beauty. Really sweet tonality, Cameron!

I took this shot during golden hour, using ND reverse grads and a polarizer to give it the right look.

Photo of the Day - July 05th, 2014 - +Tony Eckersley

We've been loving all of the fireworks photos that have been shared today but this one by +Tony Eckersley just takes the cake. It's not very often that you can capture two types of light shows, especially with as vibrant of a skyline as Las Vegas. Seriously great photo, Tony!

#GooglePlusPotD   #July4th
We got so lucky last night! We spent our first 4th July as Las Vegas residents being treated to hundreds of firework displays around the valley just as a big thunder storm rolled in around the mountains surrounding the Las Vegas area. By the time the main show started around Caesars Palace and the Stratosphere, the lightning was getting pretty intense. Eventually, the rain passed through just before the finale.

Luckily I was able to capture a few exposures that showed some of the craziness around us. The photo below is 5 shots from approximately 1 minute of the show. You can see a bigger version on my +SmugMug -

We just stumbled across this really great Then and Now article shared by +My Modern Metropolis and sourced from +Empire Magazine. Which movie photo was your favorite?
Mel Gibson - Braveheart Some actors were born to play a role. With stunning performances, these stars captivate us, move us, and leave us with an enormous impression, even after the end of a film. These photos were taken for Empire Magazine’s 20th birthday issue. They gathered some of Hollywood's biggest movie stars and photographed them in a role that brought out the very best in them. Here are some of my favorite shots. Sam Neill - Jurassic ...

Photo of the Day - June 27th, 2014 - +Peter Delaney

We felt that this dusty elephant beautifully captured by Peter was a fitting way to wind down the work week as well as the first half of 2014. Peter's stream is filled with all sorts of beautiful wildlife photos and is certainly worth paying a visit to.

Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

While he stands knee deep in the waterhole his eyes are closed as he dozes off. Now and again this giant will swish his tail or fill his trunk to spray his massive frame with the cool grey liquid. He is big – 4 meters tall and over 4 ton in weight, he is the “Godfather” as I affectionately call this giant elephant. It‚s two in the afternoon and the heat is relentless; over 30 degrees Celsius and no shade.

It’s been the same routine for weeks now. The Godfather and his two shadow bulls arrives early afternoon and commandeer the waterhole. This is the only water for 20 sq kms and the animals have travelled all day to drink this life saving water. But this “Trinity” will not give way or tolerate any other animal to drink in their presence.

A multitude of animals, springbok, gemsbok, zebra, ostrich, giraffe, even lion have waited hours for the elephants departure so that they may quench their thirst. From a photographer‚s point of view watching this action is like manna from the heavens‚ as there are attempted lion kills, sporadic jostles between herd males vying for dominance and occasional visits from black rhino that appear like spectres as the sun fades below the horizon.

When the elephants do eventually leave my heart skips a beat as I prepare for the shot that has eluded me for so long. In my mind’s eye I have visualized this scene many times. But in order for this to happen I need them to walk towards me. But each day I groan inwardly and at another missed opportunity as the trinity head off to dust bath in the opposite direction .

Today however will be different as that morning I had seen the three bulls feeding from a camel thorn tree away from their usual feeding place. Soon it will be time for them to depart. I leave, anticipating their route, and wait silently for them to come in to view. I have checked and rechecked my equipment and decided upon the camera and lens combination. I now relax and control my breathing as they come in to view.

The next ten minutes are a bliss of forgetfulness as I zone in to the task at hand; only one moment stands out.

He stands still before me in all his magnificence, raising his trunk filled with the red Kalahari dust. In one fluid movement he sprays his forehead and for one brief moment he is covered in the magic of dust and light.

Elephants having fun are awesome. There isn't much more that needs to be said here. Very cool capture, Nicole!

The Man and the Elephant

One of the most memorable experiences in Thailand during the trip with +The Giving Lens team was when we visited the elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai. The elephants here at the Ran Tong Elephant Rescue Center are treated kindly and with respect, and it was a blast watching them play in the water. I caught this photo just as we were heading back to the van.

Chromebook users, now it's even easier to backup and share your photos.

Today we've updated the Google+ Photos app for Chrome OS so that Auto Backup runs in the background.   You can just plug in an SD card and move on to other things, knowing that your photos and videos will be saved for you.

Check out +Oren Blasberg's post for more details.
Now it’s even easier to save and share photos from your Chromebook.

With the Google+ Photos app you can back up photos and videos any time you connect a phone, camera, or storage card to your Chromebook.  With our newest update Auto Backup will continue in the background even when the app is closed, making it even easier to get photos from your camera out to friends and family.

Just plug an SD card into your Chromebook and your photos and videos will be automatically backed up to Google+ Photos (for your eyes only, of course).  And that’s it! You can move on to other things or even close the app, knowing that your memories will be saved for you.

A progress bar shows how many photos have been backed up and you can pause it at any time, like when you need to give a presentation or move to a slower connection.  You’ll get notified when the backup is complete and your photos and videos are ready to share.

Get the updated Google+ Photos app for your Chromebook today.

Photo of the Day - July 09th, 2014 - +Amy Heiden

We know that the climb down to this particular spot at Panther Creek Falls is not the easiest endeavor and while we've seen our share of photos taken at its base, this particular composition by Amy stands out. The moodiness of the surroundings and natural inclusion of leading lines takes the cake and is why we're sharing it as today's #GooglePlusPotD .
Panther Creek Falls
Columbia River Gorge

I had seen a dozen photos of these falls before I finally got to see them in person earlier this year, but even the best photos don't do these falls justice.

There's just something about the smell of the damp ground, the gorgeous blanket of water caressing the rocks and how the mist hits your face when you're standing here.

Happy Birthday!!!

Here is a quick download from the camera as I finish packing for my trip tomorrow. It was such a cool show, that I just had to share :)

I had the great pleasure to hang out with +Thomas Hawk and his family +Jonathan Goody and his family +Kirsten Hrobsky +Amy Heiden and John +Julia Peterson +Sly Vegas +Charli Blake +Rob Dweck and some new people today.

We met up early in the afternoon to scope out a view for the show, hiked around and took pictures of graffiti. Then reinforcements showed up with wine and Pizza delivered to the front row. You guys are all awesome!!!

Then to top it all off, this birthday party really put on a show. One of my favorite parts - when the lights got dark and the fog horns all sounded in tribute - a sound near and dear to me :)

Photo of the Day - June 29th, 2014 - +Anthony Gelot

After seeing this romantically charming photo of the Eiffel Tower, we're itching to visit Paris. Anthony did a really great job infusing a tilt shift effect over the foreground and middle ground to bring focus right to where it matters. It also has a really cool byproduct of creating a bunch of cool specular highlights.

Paint your face and support your team

As the #WorldCup moves into the knockout phase, the stakes are getting higher and your team needs your support more than ever. Instead of getting your hands dirty with face paint (the ultimate sign of team allegiance), you can paint your favorite team’s country flag onto a photo of you and your friends. No need to go all the way to Brazil to shout out loud who you want to win. It’s simple to participate, all you need to do is:

* Take a photo of yourself and up to 4 friends who’d like their faces painted
* Share it on Google+ with the hashtag #PaintUSA or any other country in the knockout round:
* After a few minutes check back in your stream. The faces will be painted with the country flag of your choice

You can explore #PaintUSA to see other fans of team USA. Or check out other teams by replacing USA with another country still participating - like #PaintBrazil

May the best fans win!

Introducing more creative control in photo editing and a new Auto Awesome

We’re all about helping you make your photos look their best and today, we’re launching two new ways to make that happen! First, we’ve added a new type of Auto Awesome called Effects. When we detect certain landscape and urban photos backed up by you, we’ll offer up some stylish suggestions that use a combination of filters from the built-in photo editor that are totally customizable!

That brings us to our second feature: you can now view and adjust each edit made to your photos. If you want to change the frame or re-adjust the strength of a filter that you applied, you can now easily do so without losing the other edits.

Check out +John Nack's post below for more details!

#GooglePlusUpdate #AutoAwesome
Google+ Photos: edit your previous edits, and Auto Awesome Effects

If you’re afraid of commitment, then you probably don’t edit your photos online :-) Reason being: many services overwrite (aka “destroy”) your images during the editing process. So once you save a change, you can’t change your mind.

In contrast: Google+ Photos offers non-destructive editing on Android, iOS and Chrome, and it syncs your edits to the cloud. So you can start editing on one device, continue on another, and your originals are always available. Today we’re making the Chrome experience even more flexible by letting you go back and adjust your previous edits. (Commitment-phobes rejoice!) For example:

- Suppose you want to re-crop a photo but leave the other effects alone. Or keep your choice of frames, but turn up the brightness and contrast.
- Now you can, and you don’t have to start from scratch. Just open your photo in the Chrome editor, click on “Edits,” and you’ll be able to adjust the edits you’ve already made.
- When you settle on a look you really like, you can also copy those edits and apply them to another photo.

Even if you don’t have time to edit your images, we can still help your photos look their best. Take Auto Awesome, for instance: when you back up your photos and videos to Google+, we can gift you fun new versions automatically. These creations range from animated GIFs to professional-quality movies, and today we’re adding a new flavor: Auto Awesome Effects.

Now when you upload a land or cityscape photo, Effects can stylize your image to make the subject really pop. You can enjoy the new photo as is, or open the editor to make further adjustments. Either way it’s easy (and fun!).

Both updates are rolling out today, so take some pictures, try some edits, and let us know what you think.

The eeriness of this beautiful photo fits perfectly with it being Friday the 13th. All joking aside, Mikko did a brilliant job creating this photo - the minimalism and split-toning are executed so well. Lovely photo!
