The German cockroach also known as Blattella germanica is a small species of cockroach, typically about 1.1 to 1.6 cm long. German cockroaches are scavengers. They are attracted to meats, fatty foods, starches and sugars. When food shortage occurs, they turn cannibalistic, chewing at each other's wings and legs. The German cockroach reproduces faster than any other residential cockroach, growing from egg to reproductive adult in approximately 50 – 60 days.

Nests are formed either in trees, in soil mounds or underground.
Termite colonies are maintained at a high humidity. This protects the thin-skinned workers from drying out. This is especially the case for subterranean termite species, which gain most of their water from the soil. Nests are usually maintained at a temperature between 25°C - 36°C. This varies, depending on the species.

Many termite species can do great damage to unprotected buildings and other wooden structures. Their habit of remaining concealed often results in their presence being undetected until the timbers are severely damaged, leaving a thin layer of a wall that protects them from the environment.
Coptotermes has the highest number of pest species of any genus, with 28 species known to cause damage.
