What to do if you should happen to have a childs tooth knocked out.

If you or your child gets hit in the mouth and has a loose tooth, the best thing to do is try to solidify the tooth and have it checked by your general dentist as soon as possible! If the tooth has been knocked out and you can find it, rinse it off and try to put it back where it came from right away.  Be careful to not touch the root of the tooth. If you can't get it back in put it in a cup of milk (to keep it alive).  In any situation the best thing to do is get to your general dentist right away!

Wearing braces twice (first phase & second phase)

Some children may be told they need two phases of braces. The first phase occurs when they are younger, and only need braces for just a short time. The second phase starts when they are older and all permanent teeth have erupted. Most children would only like to wear braces once, and their parents probably would only like to pay for them once! If an orthodontist recommends a first phase of treatment, it’s for a good cause.  Weighing out the options is important.  It could be crucial for child’s future oral health, or self-esteem.  This will be a decision that the orthodontist, parent, and child will all have to make together.
If an option discussed is to get an appliance to correct a cross bite, or to align very crooked front teeth, then these reasons are important and you might consider a first phase. To have a child in braces twice for a simple fix; a small space or slight rotations in the front teeth, is just not necessary (and costly). These can all be fixed with the set of braces that they will get later as teenager.

Wisdom teeth 101...

A lot of patients ask “when is the best time to get wisdom teeth out?” Do they need to come out before or after braces? Really, to an Orthodontist, it shouldn't matter when they come out. Orthodontists usually yield to the general dentist as to when they recommend for them to be removed. It is a common myth that if you have wisdom teeth that are ready to erupt, they can crowd your other teeth. There is research that proves this to be false. Your teeth will move and shift regardless if you are not wearing a retainer. We recommend a retainer to all patients. If they do not want or need braces or any other orthodontic treatment, we will still recommend a retainer so they can keep their teeth they way they are.

RETAINERS AFTER BRACES

Wearing retainers after braces is crucial in order to retain the teeth to the perfect alignment the braces created. Without proper wear of the retainers, teeth can go back to the original position. There are a couple of variations of retainers. One being an acrylic retainer with an adjustable wire that can move the teeth should the patient's needs require it.  It only covers 2 surfaces of the teeth; which can allow for a little bit of shifting. Another type of retainer is a clear, plastic, 3-D retainer.  It covers all surfaces of the teeth; which prevents any shifting (if worn as instructed).  Some patients prefer this type as it can appear invisible on the teeth.  Patients should wear their retainers every night; basically for the rest of their lives.  There is not a set age where the teeth are 'set' in place.  Physics and natural aging will cause the body to change over time whether we like it or not.  In some unique cases, retainers should be worn day and night for several months and then proceeding with nights only thereafter.  Your orthodontist will determine what is best for your teeth and tell you exactly how long to wear the retainers.

The Tossing of the tooth-

Loosing teeth is a “BIG” event for any child around the world…it lets them know that they are becoming a big boy or girl.   In the United States we have the tooth fairy,  but there are many other beliefs and traditions around the world.

In Japan and Korea, it is believed that tossing your bottom teeth on the roof of your home and your top teeth underneath the house ensures healthy growth. This tradition has to do with  the direction of how the roots grow.  In Vietnam both upper and lower teeth are thrown over the house as the child shouts out a request to have the lost tooth replaced by a tooth of a mouse.  This is because rodents teeth continuously grow for their entire life.   In England during the middle ages, children were told to drop the tooth into a fire to destroy it in an attempt to ward off evil.  In Mongolia, the lost baby tooth is fed to a young dog because the dog is considered to be a guardian angel.   Once the dog has eaten the tooth, a new stronger tooth will grow back.

So no matter where you’re from or where you live, have fun loosing those baby teeth!!

What to do Before You Get Braces

If you would like to start orthodontic treatment, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you don't already have an orthodontist, get recommendations from friends or your regular dentist. Get at least two opinions, if possible. Orthodontists can vary in their treatment approach. If you don't like what one orthodontist says, get more opinions until you reach a decision. Do not ever allow extractions to be done before getting a second opinion. With new technology and smaller brackets, most people do not need teeth extracted any more!  Many orthodontists have free consultations. Research your dental insurance plan (or your spouse's) to see if any of the treatment will be covered. Understand your orthodontic coverage with your insurance company before you begin treatment because many companies will not pay if treatment is already in progress. Once you have gathered your information, you can make the wonderful decision to improve your overall health and self-esteem through orthodontic treatment!

Is it normal to feel sore after the braces are placed?

YES!  When you get your braces on, you may feel a general overall soreness in your mouth.  It is very normal for your teeth to be tender for three to five days, but everyone is different.  If the soreness is severe, you can take Tylenol (Acetaminophen) or Advil (Ibuprophren) as directed.  Stronger pain meds are not necessary and most orthodontists do not have a license to write prescriptions for patients.  The lips, cheeks, and tongue may also become irritated as they 'toughen up' and become accustomed to the surface of the braces.  You can put wax on the braces to help with the rubbing or discomfort.  Even sugarless gum will work in a pinch!  It is also beneficial to eat a soft diet for the first few days after your braces are placed. (ex: soup, pasta, mashed potatoes, yogurt, smoothies, oatmeal, etc.).  This will allow the glue to fully set up which prevents brackets from coming off, but also will help with your sore teeth.  We understand that getting braces is a lifestyle adjustment for most people, but please know that it gets better.  Be patient...it will all be worth it in the end.  Until then, keep brushing, keep flossing, and keep smiling!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this practice!! Jeremy and his amazing staff made the entire process - from consultation to removal - easy and fun for both my daughters! They have found a way to provide exceptional care while remaining incredibly friendly and fun. Always efficient and organized, we never waited to be seen! They're so good at what they do that my sophomore has decided to go into the field of orthodontics. PLUS they both now have amazing smiles. THANKS FRY!

I am so thankful for Fry Orthodontic Specialists. I started my Invisalign treatment at my dentist’s office and regret doing so. I was told she had the same training as the orthodontists and could do the same work right there in her office. Let’s just say things did not go exactly as she had mapped out and she asked Dr. Jeremy Fry for help. He took over my case and used state of the art equipment to get me into aligners that made a huge difference and completed my care. In addition, my son started traditional braces with Fry Orthodontic Specialists and had the greatest experience. The staff is friendly and cheerful and he was able to finish two months early!! He wishes they performed dental services too so he can continue going back.

I don't even know where to start....my experience was just that phenomenal with Fry Orthodontics in Overland Park. Everyone is so friendly and made this experience so pleasant. Dr. Jeremy Fry is such a good person, and also made me feel comfortable. When I originally thought about Ortho work I imagined the horror movie The Dentist, and was hesitant about treatment and often had flashbacks of my past experience at other places where it felt they just wanted money and didn't care about my experience with them or how I felt. At Fry Orthodontics I was so taken back by how I was treated and how things went so smoothly. I wore my braces for about 24 months, and any time I had a problem they were so quick to get me in, even after hours. To be completely honest I will miss going to my appointments because even when I was having a bad day, they cheered me up.

I researched numerous orthodontists last year before settling on one and discovered that Fry had the best reputation, specifically with Invisalign. Fry Orthodontic Specialists is doing a FABULOUS job with my teeth. They reviewed all of my treatment options with me before starting treatments and also helped me determine the pros and cons of braces and Invisalign. My front two teeth were VERY snaggled after being hit in the mouth with a baseball and my bottom teeth were extremely crowded. I have had Invisalign for almost one year and people are constantly commenting on how great my teeth look now! Thanks, Fry!
