"The Korean pop star PSY's viral music video "Gangnam Style" has reached the limit of YouTube's view counter. According to YouTube's Google+ account, "We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met PSY. 'Gangnam Style' has been viewed so many times we had to upgrade to a 64-bit integer (9,223,372,036,854,775,808)!"

Why use signed integers for 'number of views'?

Hole-driven prototyping? I'm not sure I want to know what that is.

Centralize. Decentralize. Centralize.  Decentralize. Centralize. Decentralize.  The pig cycle continues -- of course.

Howard on Curry-Howard
When writing Propositions as Types, I realised I was unclear on parts of the history. Below is a letter I wrote to William Howard and his response (with corrections he provided after I asked to publish it). I believe it is a useful historical document, and am grateful to Howard for his ...

Bought something last week at an Apple Store in Boulder, Colorado.  No paper receipt.  Electronic receipt is probably in hyperspace.

"To minimize the possibility of indirectly harming others, computing professionals must minimize malfunctions by following generally accepted standards for system design and testing. Furthermore, it is often necessary to assess the social consequences of systems to project the likelihood of any serious harm to others." (From ACM Code of Ethics, Sec. 1.2.)
