62 Circles ...
I've been (re)organizing and (re)ordered my 62 remaining G+ circles (I just ditched a few)!
I know all my circles, or at least their names, more or less by heart, but ever since the new G+ UI was introduced (the current one in it's first iteration, back when everybody complained about the unused white space on larger screens, and as I see it worse, that the circle bar to the left disappeared and was replaced with the top bar for circles), I have been reordering my circles constantly putting the ones I, for the moment, tend to use most first, to make them show in the limited top bar. Before that, I had them alphabetically sorted, but now they where in some seemingly random order, so even if I know which circles I have, I have had a hard time finding them in scroll-lists, etc.
I have also started to use the circles slightly differently than I did before (partly due to the limited number of visible ones, and partly due to the introduction of communities. I used to actively post to interest circles for different topics, but those posts most often end up in some community now instead. The posts I do in English outside communities, nowadays, most often are public, and what I post in Swedish I often share with one out of two large circles containing Scandinavians, one with people that are interested in Tech in some way and the other (overlapping) one with people interested in Social Networking. Some posts I aim at all Scandinavians in my circles.
Sure, the rest of the circles are good to have to organize the ones I follow, but in practice I would, for posting purposes, probably just need 5 circles or so.
Also on the topic of reading, the communities have somewhat invalidated the need for interest-circles. But I currently have close to 2400 people in my circles, many of them posting very actively, whilst others does not post so often but when they do I don't want their posts to be flushed away in the flood of the main stream or my larger circles. Thus, I feel I still need to split the ones I follow up a bit for reading purposes.
I therefore kept 62 of my circles. They are of two types (or really three) and the factors defining them are:
1. Interest (what are the people interested to read about, and what kind of posts are included in their streams)
2. How I'm connected to the people outside G+ (Old friends, colleagues from former and current workplaces, new friends that I found via G+, people I met via sports and hobbies, etc, etc)
(3. Language - really if the persons do understand Swedish or not.)
Some circles are obviously based on combinations of the criteria and most circles are overlapping, sharing people with several other circles.
I now have sorted them in some kind of (il?)logical way that makes sense to me, and that I believe will make me able to quickly scroll to, and find, the circles I need when I need them. Am I extreme in my circle frenzy, or do you guys also have (too) many circles?
How many circles do you have?
Based on which criteria do you populate and organize them?
In which way do you have them ordered?
