Wow. I've always seem them as abrasive and pompous beyond my ability to relate, so this makes me feel a bit better about thinking they're assholes. The comments on Jurgen's thread are very insightful.

They are assholes, aren't they.
As a movement, New Atheism seems like it would be so compatible with feminism — and yet that hasn't been the case

Yes, I think the author very astutely nailed this one. I've always felt more of an attachment to Steve Rogers than the other "superheroes", I just didn't know exactly why. This is why.
As one of Marvel's longest-running and most popular superheroes, Captain America has spawned no shortage of imitations. And, although there's plenty about him that's easy to mimic, there's one reason that no one else has gotten it quite right yet.

Interesting study. All things being equal the heavier babies perform better in 3rd-8th grades, though other factors such as mother's education play a greater role.

Lesson to future mothers: fatten up those fetuses, carry them to term, and graduate from college. :)

Hey all, here's a post showing how famous graphs look if you make them interactive and with web tools. Tools used: R, ggplot2, Python, MATLAB, and D3.js:

http://blog.plot.ly/post/120532468127/how-to-analyze-data-seven-modern-remakes-of-the
Graphs can be beautiful, powerful tools. Graphs help us explore and explain the world. For hundreds of years, humans have used graphs to tell stories with data. To pay homage to the history of data visualization and to the power of graphs, we’ve recreated the most iconic graphs ever made. Some are remakes of the original shown in a modern way, and some are efforts to recreate the original. This post was inspired by Edward Tufte, a data visual...

My dad was a cop in Los Angeles and even as a naive kid I could feel how racist and mean the environment was when I'd visit the station or we'd hang with his cop friends. I know quite a few people in law enforcement now that I'm grown, and while they don't seem mean or racist in social settings away from the job, I can see the same attitudes that drove my dad and his colleagues years ago, and that really worries me.

My interaction with uniformed officers over the years has mostly been as the victim of harassment and intimidation by white men who have no tolerance for any version of reality that conflicts with them not having the biggest cock and being able to piss the farthest. I'm a white guy, and I speak English natively. I can't imagine how my experiences would have been different if my skin we're a different color, but I am certain it would have resulted in one of: incarceration, hospitalization, or death.

My father now works as a private investigator mostly for criminal defense, and is now able to see just how completely corrupt and viscous the law enforcement side of the criminal justice system really is. I don't know if he is able to correlate the abuses he investigates with his law enforcement past, but I know it infuriates him to see officers behaving without consequence. I have to agree wholeheartedly with the author of this article, that the only way things will start to get better is if we find a way to hold officers accountable. That system does not exist today but it must!

Man it's so sad that some people just can't help themselves out of the cycle of hate. Anyone who would post personal information about another person (ssn, address, etc.) then suggest that others commit acts of hate against them is, in my opinion, a terrorist and a coward.

Those who would anonymously threaten to commit hateful acts against someone is also, in my opinion, a terrorist and a coward.

So sad.

I am not often blindingly furious, but today I am.

Kathy Sierra's writing has been very influential on me. When she was harassed off the Internet some years back, it was horrific.  When she came back, just a little bit, It was a sheer delight.

Today she is gone again.  I cannot blame her, even a little bit. But I am sad and angry as all hell that it happened.

Man, if I were an actor I'd be really worried, this artistry is seriously awesome!  Now we just need the next-gen consoles and PC gaming hardware to be able to provide this level of rendering detail in real-time.

Holy shnikies! This is totally computer-generated!
