The "Michigan Micro Mote" is a new computing device roughly the size of a grain of salt, and it's not just a theoretical proposal, it physically exists and apparently is approaching production level. They are using modern chip manufacturing technology, but using that technology to build the whole device instead of just the chip component.
They've created a Cortex-M0 microcontroller + custom battery + custom solar cell + custom power subsystem + custom radio transmitter + very basic camera & motion detector + custom I2C temperature & pressure sensors, and yet the whole thing is roughly 1mm in size! There's no mention of current manufacturing cost, but it's fair to assume that in 5-10 years time, tiny devices like this will start becoming mass produced at a very tiny cost due to the very tiny size.
Note that this device is a microcontroller (just like an Arduino) and therefore hundreds of times slower than a smartphone, so this technology is for IoT and tiny distributed sensors, rather than trying to embedded a smartphone into your fingernail. But it's definitely a solid glimpse at what our future technology is going to start allowing, when we use modern chip fabrication technologies to build whole devices rather than just chips!
