Looking for a cheap, bombproof VHF HT with idiot proof controls - ideally something like a VHF BF888. Everything I've seen so far has been UHF - any ideas?

Hibby: I have a VHF Puxing PX-777 that I've been using for ~5 years for everything from point to point on mountains, local simplex, repeaters and packet. It's basic and an old design, but it's lasted me well over the years!

Jason howe: I can't testify on distance limits on vhf with the puxing 777, though on UHF it's basically good for 2 miles whether it be standard antennas or a Nagano antenna, and 20-40 miles pending or not you can hit a local repeater or not...

You are likely going to be stuck around 2.5 miles of service on a basic UHF 4-5 watt cb radio on a 9 dbi antenna, I do not know the propergation distance of UHF antennas once you factor in a 20-40 foot mast for service range..

On vhf I can only attest to what I have seen on 26-27 MHz cb band whether it be mobile or base station setups, that was 1000km+ so at present so if you have a min limit of 20-500 miles you wish to cover I would say you might get better luck on a cb radio pending on output of the UHF repeater will dictate its coverage distance and its distance you can connect at..

I haven't used a lineal amp on a UHF cb to know its coverage distance..

Typically pushing out 4-5 watts will not get you much distance..

The model of 777 I have does 465-520mhz band coverage...

I live on a hill best range I've seen is 2.5 km whether transmission was at full power or less than 2 watts at a miles estimation 1.25 miles
