To stretch, or not to stretch.

TL;DR do it if you like it, don't if you don't.
Many people stretch when they exercise or play sport. Others don’t stretch but feel they should. And some people don’t see any reason to stretch at all. The reasons for stretching are diverse. Most people think stretching makes them more flexible. Some believe stretching reduces the risk of injury, reduces soreness experienced after exercise, or enhances sporting performance. Optimists think stretching does all these things.

That shit costs like 1300 yen in the Japanese supermarket. It complements a nice piece of grilled fish and rice. Yummy

Yeah! This is great news.

First implementation of requestIdleCallback is in Chrome Canary!

What is it? It allows applications to cooperatively schedule background tasks such that they do not introduce delays to other high priority tasks that share the same event loop, such as input processing, animations and frame compositing.

For more details on the API, the spec, and more examples, see:
https://w3c.github.io/requestidlecallback/

Finally, to get started:
- Boot up Chrome Canary
- Enable chrome://flags/#enable-experimental-web-platform-features
- Restart the browser
- Experiment with rIC, ..., and please provide feedback!

An electrical engineer, a mechanical engineer, and a software engineer are riding in a car on their way to a conference. The car’s brakes fail on a hill; but luckily the engineers are able to pull the car to the side without anyone getting hurt.

The electrical engineer says: “The problem might be in the electrical system. I will start by checking the fuse box.”

The mechanical engineer says: “The problem might be in the hydraulics. l will start by checking the fluid levels”

The software engineer says: “Why don’t we all get out of the car and get back in and see if that fixes the problem”

Good joke, good read on power cycling.

Power cycle / will not fix => no loss: That's a blatant lie.  You certainly lost time.  You likely lost state and debugging information.  Hell, maybe the system won't even come back up at all depending on what the root cause of the problem is.

Also, don't forget that the crappier a system is, the more likely it is to hang or crash for obscure reasons and leave you with no recourse but rebooting.  Conversely, a really well-designed, well-documented, high quality system will almost never hang or crash, and when there is a problem with it, blindly rebooting it is not likely to help, quite to the contrary.

The article may seem superficially funny, but it's encouraging bad engineering practices, it's apologetic of both sloppy design and sloppy handling of systems.  This is exactly the widespread attitude that gets us all the shitty software we have to deal with every day and that at least i am incredibly sick and tired of.

You know, in the late 70s and early 80s, i worked on a variety of HP computers (HP-67 since 1976, HP-9825B since 1982, HP-200 since 1984).  None of those ever froze or crashed, and i never rebooted any of them, and all failure conditions were properly reported and documented.  Given that proper engineering was possible 40 years ago, what's so hard about it today?  Sigh...  :-(

The fish they serve is fresh and from the area. That's the only thing that's good about this restaurant. The atmosphere is a bit dated but OK. All fish came covered in thick, creamy sauce that took away all the flavor from the fish itself. The salmon I had was overcooked and to salty. The presentation of food is boring and without much attention to details. Prices are high if compared to other great restaurants in that area.
