Had a major deja vu moment in VR yesterday. Downloaded a demo called "VR Spacewalk". This was exactly the VR sim that the NASA engineer I worked with at NASA in 1987-8 was building - a simulator for the manned maneuvering unit (MMU) that astronauts used to travel around the space shuttle and station. Yes, a space suit jet pack. At NASA we put the controls for the MMU sim on the arm of an office chair because we found people would get dizzy and fall when wearing the helmet VR display. People would even fall out of the chair! I didn't have that problem then or now, but had to close my eyes once when I accidentally lost control and spun out! Fortunately they have a control that stops all rotation automatically with one button in the demo. Follow the link to see a video of it in action.
In this virtual reality simulation, made by IgnisVR, you are in a spacesuit making a virtual spacewalk in earth space. Find your way to the ISS

Last week I posted a new video tutorial of how to fly the little-known flight simulator that is hidden in Google Earth. And this time with max HD settings!

Pretty disappointed with the way Google transitioned to the new +Google Photos with a lot of missing features that were already supported by the Google+ Photos on both the desktop and the mobile apps.  And they decide to suddenly yank out continued support for the better tools! The biggest missing feature is no support for #Photospheres ! Shame on you Google! There were a huge number of better features for editing photos as well. The new Google Photos is so barebones in features I don't see any serious photographers being interested. It's like Photos was developed completely independently from the people who developed Google+ Photos and they ignored features they couldn't easily replicate or geared it towards people who have no idea how to do anything sophisticated. I get the feeling they think the best user is a dumb user.

+Richard Chesher It appears about the time I posted this comment, Google added support back for Photospheres on the desktop and Android apps for Google+ and also on the Android app for Google Photos.  But, it still isn't available for the desktop version of Google Photos.

Tahina is back in North Carolina, USA!  We actually ended up in the exact same marina and slip where we started the circumnavigation in November 2009. It's been a long and wonderful journey and we have memories of many fantastic experiences, people and places. Read more at http://TahinaExpedition.com/blog

Warning to non-meat-eaters: BBQ photos below.  We were walking to a store to get a SIM card for our phone in St. John, US Virgin Isles, and smelled some fantastic BBQ smells. Later we came back for lunch. WOW!  Candi's Delights is worth a short walk from Cruz Bay for some really excellent BBQ!  Karen here about to dig in (just an hour or two before the finger accident).

Enjoying diving in to the current state of VR with my recent acquisition of an Oculus Rift DK2 developer edition. While this probably looks a bit clunky to many people, it's way better than the heavy 10 lb helmet-based VR I worked with at NASA in 1987. And a LOT less expensive than the roughly $500K in HW it cost to make back then!

Gotta love that new NASA GIF animation showing the moon passing in front of the Earth from 1 million miles out - and that's the far side of the moon folks!  Read more about it at the NASA web site: https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/from-a-million-miles-away-nasa-camera-shows-moon-crossing-face-of-earth

Our Tahina Expedition circumnavigation route is now complete. November 14, 2009 through June 11, 2015. Over 44,000 nautical miles, 32 countries, 5.7 years. We ended up in the exact same spot where we started, at a marina in Carolina Beach, North Carolina. What a trip! See the interactive map here (and links to the stories, photos, and details): http://www.tahinaexpedition.com/2011/09/map-of-tahina-expedition.html

Read my latest post at the GEB about the new VR glasses from Wearality.  Last chance to join their Kickstarter for early access to the glasses this summer.

It was recently announced that Michael Jones, one of the original founders of Google Earth, has left Google and is now CEO of a cool new VR glasses maker called Wearality. These glasses are unlike other VR glasses because of an ultra-wide 150 degree field of view thanks to patented fresnel lens technology.

I'm into photography, sailing, diving, Google Earth, Internet, space development, scifi, VR, and technology gadgets (phones, tablets, etc.)

Follow our Tahina Expedition - a six year trip around the world.  My wife and I departed in the fall of 2009, sailed through the Caribbean, went through the Panama Canal, visited the Galapagos, sailed across the Pacific to New Zealand and Australia, through Indonesia and Southeast Asia, across the Indian Ocean, across the South Atlantic, through the Caribbean and Bahamas and returned to the US in June 2015.  We used Google Earth, photography, and all kinds of other technologies to help share our experiences.  It was the experience of a lifetime!
