Panic-buying of toilet paper

It's the hottest news in Taiwan these days. I have similar opinion as the author, the media contributed to such buying frenzy mostly. When I read that 30% price hike on the news, then soon also read about major manufacturers said that they won't raise as much, one major vendor even said they will raise 8%, not as reported 30%. Those corrections from the vendors were not covered as intensive as panic-buying at the retailers. Then the social media help escalate the panic.

One of the trend of news media here is to swarm into simple sensational stories and then keep repeating them from different aspects. There used to be "news" about Korean entertainer Psy's Gangnam Style everyday for more than half a year on TV news here, such like click counts on YouTube, how popular it was in individual countries, among different age groups, among each of various entertainment places, the reaction of people in different countries, ... even why it was not as popular in Japan. During those days, "Gangnam Style" was daily TV news elements here.

So, I think in these days, panic-buying and reaction to it is part of "must-be" elements of daily TV news along with real "news" and other "special" elements such as Korean entertainers, food & restaurants, footage of dashboard cameras, complaints between biz owners and consumers.

Can our media exercise some self-discipline, maintain certain standards and follow journalists' codes of ethics?

To my surprise, in the eyes of American political analyst, the election of Taipei Mayor in this Nov. is what China has been biding for.
