Birthday Mouse

Today in History: Computer Mouse Commercially Debuted, 1981
On April 27, 1981 — 34 years ago today — the first mouse for use with a personal computer, the Xerox Star system (Xerox 8010), was officially introduced as a commercial product. The first mouse prototype was invented by Douglas Englebart at the Stanford Research Institute in the 1960s. Xerox subsequently launched its research and development facility, PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) in 1970, where it developed the first computer that included a mouse for navigation; however, it never intended for this product, called Alto, to be a commercial product. During the 1970s, Xerox manufactured about 1,500 Altos that were only in use on an experimental basis within Xerox and at another 500 collaborating universities and government offices. Finally, Xerox introduced a commercial product, the Xerox Star System (a.k.a. Xerox 8010), that incorporated a number of technologies that have since become standard in personal computers —

• bitmapped display
• window-based graphical user interface (GUI)
• screen icons
• screen folders
• a mouse
• e-mail
• Ethernet networking
• file servers
• print servers

Apple and Steve Jobs incorporated many of PARC’s ideas in the Lisa and Macintosh products. The biggest difference between the Xerox Star system and the Apple products was cost. The Xerox Star system, when it was announced on this day in 1981, was a single station in an integrated document preparation system, centering around laser printing (then quite expensive) and designed for large corporations, law firms, and big organizations that produced massive quantities of paper documents. Each Star workstation cost about $16,000 (about $42,000 today), and the basic integrated system started at $75,000 (about $195,000 today).

DETERMINED TREES in Bryce Canyon

Bryce Canyon a really awesome national park...

The Bryce Canyon area was settled by Mormon pioneers in the 1850s and was named after Ebenezer Bryce, who homesteaded in the area in 1874. The area around Bryce Canyon became a National Monument in 1923 and was designated as a National Park in 1928. The park covers 145.02 km2 and receives relatively few visitors compared to Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon, largely due to its remote location.
