You can search for apps by typing their uppercase letters in the App Launcher Search box.

For example, the *C*hrome *R*emote *D*esktop App can easily be found by typing "CRD".

I would love to see this functionality built into the Windows and Mac launchers!!

Similar functionality already exists in the Windows 7/8 search box +Robert Khayat. Not sure about OSX.
 
Actually, +François Beaufort, it does not have to be upper-case. I've found either upper or lower work on both my Chromebook (HP14) and my Windows machines.
 
I open WebKit.app as "wk" all the time, both in spotlight and launchpad.
 
I just tested this in the chrome app launcher on my Win 8.1 tablet and it worked +Robert Khayat.
