Free speech cannot exist without strong encryption. New column on Privacy News.

Freedom of Speech was never the freedom to sit alone in a padded room and mutter incomprehensibly to yourself. The concept necessarily involves communicating a thought to one or more other people, and therefore, includes your right to select those people. This was obvious when we only spoke face to face, and freedom of speech was enshrined; now, technology has changed our ability to talk to people at a distance, but not the basic concept. Therefore, strong encryption is a prerequisite to maintain the very concept of Freedom of Speech.

The problem is that encryption, like the Internet itself, is seen a separate phenomenon. But it’s not. It deeply integrated into how we exercise our freedoms and safeguard our liberties today. It used to be that all freedoms not just could, but typically would be exercised in an analog manner.

Today, however, we exercise our fundamental liberties like the freedoms of assembly, speech, opinion, the press, and thought through the Internet. And therefore, the internet itself has become just a fundamental a right as all the other rights we exercise through it.

Therefore, free speech today does not exist without strong encryption.

Insightful.

"turning your sadness into anger can unnecessarily hurt you and the people you care about as you aggressively attack when what you really need is comfort and time to process, while turning your anger into sadness can unnecessarily hurt you and the people you care about by causing inaction when what you really need is focused, burning energy to right a wrong"
Why and how sadness and anger often fill in for one another.

“Today's vote on the Telecoms Single Market package in the European Parliament constitutes a broken promise both on the end of roaming surcharges and the establishment of net neutrality”, says Julia Reda, Member of the European Parliament for the Pirate Party and shadow rapporteur for the ...

Google has now been ordered by the Information Commissioner's Office, which is responsible for enforcing data privacy laws in the UK, to remove links to news stories about the stories that were previously removed from search results under "Right to Be Forgotten" rulings. In other words, the ICO is attempting to subvert the Streisand Effect.
The Right to Be Forgotten has proved somewhat controversial. While some see the requirement for Google to remove search results that link to pages that contain information about people that is

A farsa continua:

"In 2014, it really looked like Europe was moving towards strong net neutrality, while the US was going to allow for special fast lanes on the internet. In 2015... everything has gone the other way. The US passed real net neutrality rules, while Europe has not only decided to kill net neutrality, but has done so in a way where they pretend that they're actually supporting net neutrality.

In some way, this isn't a surprise. EU Digital Commissioner Gunther Oettinger recently mocked net neutrality and its supporters, saying they had turned it into a "Taliban-like" issue. Then a month ago, rumors started to fly that the weekly "trialogue" meetings between the EU Commission, the Council of the EU and the EU Parliament was looking to ditch net neutrality altogether. Instead, it appears that the final solution was actually to redefine net neutrality to pretend they were offering it, while really killing it. And, as a consolation prize, they're killing off roaming charges around Europe (which can be pretty extreme). But that is little consolation for the fact that they're actually destroying net neutrality in the process. "

Fascinating :D I'd use all of them except for absolute direction, I think it's less refined than the rest.

Very proud to be open-sourcing TensorFlow, Google's newest Deep Learning framework! TensorFlow is both a production-grade C++ backend, which runs on Intel CPUs, NVidia GPUs, Android, iOS and OSX, and a very simple and research-friendly Python front-end that interfaces with Numpy, iPython Notebooks, and all the familiar Python-based scientific tooling that we love. TensorFlow is what we use every day in the Google Brain team, and while it's still very early days and there are a ton of rough edges to be ironed out, I'm excited about the opportunity to build a community of researchers, developers and infrastructure providers around it. Try it out!

New findings from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) provide the strongest evidence yet that liquid water flows intermittently on present-day Mars.

Hey +Zach Weiner you're one of the few online artists that has made me cry from laughing so much - that was All-Despising Baby Skull.

This one here is one I relate to a lot too.
Thank you for taking things too far, not only is it comedic brilliance, I believe society actually benefits.

Great service, very timely, hand-delivered on the day after the order. Have worked multiple times with them in the past and won't hesitate to do so again, great experience altogether.

I'm afraid I only have 5 stars to give. Tried three different fondues in a large group, all of them were very good. Best of all was the house one, Chaesalp fondue. Very good and friendly service.
