pretty much sums it up: "Birdman is a terrific movie. Boyhood is a masterpiece, and its loss feels different from an ordinary Oscar loss. It feels like a missed opportunity for the Oscars to seize their relevance, to control their relationship to posterity. It feels like a loss we’ll be smarting about for a long time. 10, 20, 50 years from now, we’ll look back, and slap our heads and say, How did they let this happen?"

There are two kinds of travesties that can happen in the Best Picture category: the ordinary travesty, and the epochal travesty. Tonight, for the first time in 20 years, we’ve witnessed an epochal travesty. The ordinary travesty happens many years at the Oscars; it happens when a mediocre or outright...

"What's most terrifying about death is the ending of their own being. Each of us is, naturally, at the center of a remarkably vivid life. We're center stage in our own dramas of love and hardship, victory and defeat. The idea that it could just end, that we could just end, evokes nothing short of horror for many people. As Woody Allen famously put it: 'Life is full of misery, loneliness and suffering — and it's all over much too soon.'"

The idea that we, as individuals, did not exist 1,000 years ago doesn't seem to worry us. So, why does the idea of not existing in the future freak us out so much? Adam Frank explores this notion.

just another thing wrong with the Academy:
"A simpler and more likely explanation is that The Babadook just isn’t the kind of movie that gets nominated for major awards. Horror, that most disreputable of genres, goes notoriously unnoticed by the voting bloc of AMPAS, a group that would rather celebrate some faintly “important” middlebrow achievement than an expertly made monster movie. Only bona fide box-office phenomena have ever occupied the middle circle of an Oscar/horror Venn diagram: Films like Jaws, The Exorcist, Silence Of The Lambs, and The Sixth Sense shattered the glass ceiling of the Academy’s genre snobbery only by proving themselves too successful to ignore. The Babadook isn’t a big enough hit for voters to “forgive” its “low” aims. Never mind that the film grapples with depression and parental anxiety much more thoughtfully and trenchantly than, say, an Oscar-winning mediocrity like The Hours. The fact that one of Davis’ costars is a fiendish specter is enough to disqualify her."

This year’s Oscar nominations are announced on January 15. In anticipation of the conventional wisdom the Academy will likely uphold, we’re highlighting unlikely candidates—the dark horses we’d love to see compete on Oscar night.Jennifer Kent’s fledgling fright flick The Babadook is one of the most

midreputable TV isn't trash TV.

Mad Men is a prestige drama. Louie is a prestige sitcom. The Newsroom, like it or not, gets the prestige tag too. “Prestige” has become a term of art when talking about television, and not necessarily a term that means “good.” Plenty of shows have the hallmarks of a prestige drama—heavy themes, high

I can't wait for these things to fully happen.
"You forget that a robot is differentiating cars from pedestrians from mopeds from raccoons. You forget that millions of photons are being fired from a laser and interpreting, processing, and reacting to the hand signals of a cyclist. You forget that instead of an organic brain, which has had millions of years to evolve the cognitive ability to fumble its way through a four-way stop, you’re being piloted by an artificial one, which was birthed in less than a decade."

On writers and rules:
"It’s not that good writers have chosen to flout a rule; it’s that the rule is not a rule in the first place. What Heller and many writers before him have never asked is: What makes a rule a rule? Who decides? Where does it come from? They write as if there’s some tribunal or rules committee who makes the rules of English, which there isn’t, or that it’s a matter of logic or objective reality, which it isn’t."

This article originally appeared in Vulture. Over the past month, Vulture polled 116 culture creators, mavens, and movers and shakers about the year in movies, TV, books, music, memes, and more. The wide-ranging results showed that the respondents were just as bedazzled by their cohorts’ output as we were—and, sometimes, just as rankled, too.
