Decisions, Decisions, Decisions:

While having too many options can be overwhelming at times, for a patient newly diagnosed with breast cancer, having a number of treatment options to choose from can be a good thing. Many women faced with breast cancer immediately assume that mastectomy may be the better option when compared with breast-conservation therapy (which includes lumpectomy) because it involves removing all of the breast tissue—increasing the odds of preventing secondary tumors later. Breast Conservation Is an Option, Like Mastectomy, for Large Breast Cancers:

In the biggest study to date evaluating patients with nonmetastatic, large, invasive breast cancers, survival rates were found to be similar for patients treated with either breast conservation surgery and radiation, or mastectomy, according to an analysis published in Cancer.
“For decades, breast cancers have been felt to be amenable to lumpectomy with radiation only if the tumors were 5 centimeters, or smaller. This is because the prospective trials that compared the two surgery types didn’t enroll patients whose tumors were larger than 5 centimeters,” said lead investigator Richard J. Bleicher, MD, Department of Surgical Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center – Temple Health. “Since there are no clinical trials evaluating breast conservation therapy versus mastectomy for tumors over 5 centimeters, breast conservation is still considered relatively contraindicated in current guidelines.” Read more: http://bit.ly/2emYAfH

Recently Renovated Chapel Offers Quiet Respite:

With the completion of renovations in late summer, Fox Chase Cancer Center reopened its chapel as a sacred space where patients, families, and staff can seek respite and engage in quiet prayer and reflection. The well-received space offers various spiritual and religious resources, including pastoral care's Booklet of Prayers now published in six different languages.

Spearheaded by chaplain Barbara Klimowicz, the chapel renovation project brought together a team of many to transform the space. The work followed many years of planning and fundraising, and included the construction of new walls, installation of new carpeting and skylights, restoration of stained glass, and fresh paint. The centerpiece of the room is a custom-designed altar that also functions as a podium to accommodate a range of services and events for people of all faith backgrounds.

The chapel is located on the third floor of the Center Building (behind the telephone operators' desk). Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, please call Fox Chase's pastoral care office at 215-728-2944.
