MULCH MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Mulches are materials placed over the soil surface to maintain moisture and improve soil conditions. Adding mulch around your trees will help them withstand drought and competition from grass or weeds. Even older trees will benefit from mulching. Mulch installed over the roots of trees can mimic natural forest conditions and improve plant health. A layer of organic mulch between 2 to 4” deep can improve the aesthetics of a landscape, will conserve soil moisture, reduce competition from other plants, decrease soil compaction and help prevent soil erosion. Soil temperature will be cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Mulch must be applied properly. The mulch should NOT be mounded up around the trunk of the tree. This can hold moisture, creating an environment for decay pathogens to cause a crown rot that kills vascular tissue. Soil or mulch should be no higher than the root flares of the tree. Keep Mulch 6-8 inches away from the trunk of your tree.

Mulching is one of the most beneficial things a home owner can do for the health of a tree. Ask your arborist at Four Seasons Tree Care to provide a proposal for applying mulch around your trees to give your landscape that healthy and uniform, well-cared-for appearance. If your tree had a say in the matter, its entire root system would be mulched.

TREE AND SHRUB PRUNING
Pruning is important in establishing healthy, well formed trees and shrubs. Our tree specialists prune to remove diseased branches as well as deadwood and stubs that serve as a breeding area for insects and fungi. Crossing branches, water shoots, sucker growth and branches forming weak attachments are removed whenever possible to eliminate potential failure. This also enhances health, structure, and the aesthetic value of the tree. The lower canopy of the tree may be raised by removing lower branches as needed. If necessary, the trees may also be selectively thinned for better circulation of light and air. Clearances can be provided for buildings, driveways and sidewalks.

Proper pruning at early stages of tree development promotes good tree health in addition to being cost effective. Pruning should be performed every three to five years. Trees that are transplants, injured by construction or diseased may require more frequent pruning to remove any deadwood that occurs.

It should be noted that improper pruning can cause significant damage or death to your trees. Your trees are far too valuable to risk having them damaged by inexperienced or unqualified individuals.

EMERALD ASH BORER TREATMENTS
Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a highly destructive invasive pest that arrived from Asia, most likely in untreated ash wood used for packing material.  EAB attacks healthy and unhealthy ash of any size. Ash trees are an important part of urban and rural landscapes. They are commonly found on city streets, in woodlots, in windbreaks, and in forests across southern Canada and the U.S. If not managed, the impact of EAB will be devastating.  Treatment timing for southern Ontario would be from mid June to the end of August. Contact us to see if your Ash trees are viable and suited for treatment. http://fourseasonstreecare.com/

COMPLETE PLANT HEALTH CARE
We perform timely treatments using the least invasive or toxic method to maintain pests and diseases at a level that does not cause a problem to plant health. These treatments consist of foliar sprays, soil applications and trunk injections. The frequency and products used varies depending on the insect or disease, type of plant, its location, environment and the weather. Infestation by certain insects can cause the death of the host plant, a result that can often be prevented. Emerald Ash Borer is one of those insects. We offer trunk injected treatments of TreeAzin to protect Ash trees from this pest. Often insects and diseases are a secondary problem and the primary cause may go unnoticed. Focus should be on complete plant health care.

AERATION VERTICAL MULCH
Aeration vertical mulch is advised for young trees already planted into compacted soil with little organic content or established trees that have suffered soil compaction. It enhances the rooting environment in order to stimulate better root growth. This process involves drilling 2″ diameter holes at 2 ft. spacing and to a depth of 12-14″. The holes are then filled with a mixture of organic matter, fertilizer and mycorrhizae (beneficial fungi).

ROOT CROWN EXAMINATION
It is not uncommon to find soil or mulch levels that are too high on the trunk of a tree or to find trees that are planted too deep. These conditions can be very detrimental for trees as they can promote girdling (strangling) roots, vascular rot in the trunk and oxygen deprivation to roots. By performing a root crown examination using an air spade tool we are able to mitigate the condition that is compromising the health of your plant.
