Close foundation vents. (a note from Kudzu.com)
To seal, or not to seal; that is the question. Foundation vents help keep your crawlspace dry and mold-and mildew-free. However, the cold draft these vents create during the winter can cause your home to be less energy-efficient and can put your pipes at risk if they're in your crawlspace. Bottom line: It's safe to close your foundation vents for the coldest months of the year and, in fact, it may be a big mistake -- energy-wise -- to keep them open. Find other ways you may be letting heat escape from your home: Watch the video now. http://ow.ly/sp1lW

Water is often a culprit in damaging your home’s foundation. It seeps through the soil and puts pressure on walls and causes cracks.

Block crawlspace openings. According to the National Pest Management Association, rats, possum and other rodents will invade 21 million homes this winter. Frigid temperatures eliminate natural sources of food and shelter, driving them to warm homes for survival. If your crawlspace is open, you might as well roll out the red carpet for them, so to help keep them out, block any crawlspace vents and openings. This will force these unwanted house guests to look elsewhere for a winter hideaway. (Tried everything to get rid of the critters? http://ow.ly/sS1wx
