Finally finished Go-Busters.
The first half/original story (before the Toei/TV Asahi shelved it and changed the intro song) was sooo slow and incredibly boring until the last few episodes. Once we got to the second half, this turned into some damn good sentai.
*Yeah, I hated the suits -- but I liked the leather.
*Yeah, I hated how lame their weaknesses were and how it killed the tone (should've left the comedy to the buddyroids) but at least they were fleshed out enough to have weaknesses.
*No stock henshin footage? You mean, they cant spam roll call?? That was a huuuuuge win.
*The idea behind the Buster Machines having multiple modes was great, but the machines were friggen ugly but the Special FX were PRETTY DAMN GREAT
*Mech combos not being spammed and they actually have to fight sperately often? YESSSSSS
*The overall special effects were great
*Jin, Jin, Jin, Jin
*The Returns movie giving a big middle finger to PR and Sentai tropes that Go Busters abandoned was a nice touch.
*Speaking of: the fact that this was clearly inspired by PR (specifically RPM) and was Japan's homage to our 20th anniversary of PR.
*I had seen them all in crossover movies before (SHT, SHT:Z, GoBusters vs Gokaigers) but after watching the series and then rewatching the movies, I got a new appreciation for them. And their own movies were damn good (Returns, and Vs. Gokaiger especially)
*The first half plot and MOW all worrying about the stupid Enetron tanks
*The fact that people think it has a spy theme-- It's clearly PRIVATE SECTOR MILITARY
*The second half intro song
*the first half plot and pace until they get to YOU KNOW WHERE
*First half metaroid designs were high quality but uninspired
Round of Applause:
*Enter: Best. Sentai. Villain. EVER.
(I think Enter deserves several rounds of applause)
The season has great character development ... which is probably why the first half was soooo boring.
This seems to be a common problem of the series: top-notch effort into a zzzzz or uninspired result. Mechs and suits tech and sfx were great, but the design sucks; the idea for not following sentai tropes was great, but executed poorly for half the show; actual character development, but what was developed was zzzz.
Of the two sentai I said I would never give a shot (Go Busters and ToQger), I am glad I gave them both a shot -- Go-Busters mainly for Enter.
It wasn't as bad as I assumed it was, but it also didn't completely make me a do a 180 like ToQger did.
Go Busters is definitely not in my top 5 Sentai, but definitely not in the bottom 5.
C'est la vie. Adieu Go-Busters
