Dear Friends,

Writing today to reflect on where we're at in marketing our small businesses, and what's changed as we head into the new year.

In 2011 when I opened Foodcart Media, we had all these exciting new digital tactics being advertised to us – just like the Holiday Season we're in, with fix-it brands inviting us to put their shiny new tools under the tree. They move a lot of product appealing to a DIY dream that most of us don't quite get around to fulfilling. I'm talking to you, 12-piece mechanic's screwdriver set!

In our business marketing, the cool tools were Facebook, Twitter, SEO, automated feeds and the rest. As Foodcart Media, I helped companies be able to pursue the digital marketing tactics they wanted to get into. That worked, to a point. Like the small business world in general, my clients and I realized that tactical success, defined in terms of social media metrics, didn't always translate to business success. Sure, I got more hits, more opens. But not necessarily more business.

Bringing us back to today, the new year, the new opportunity. The new-look, technology-driven digital marketing shine has worn off for me – and the people calling me.  We're building business, not "conversions." Sound strategy – solving the why's before dealing with the what's and how's. That's where we're at today: first principles are the new next.

And that has meant parking the Foodcart Media and focusing on the totality of entrepreneur marketing. Right sizing for my business. Knowing my customers. Connecting to them around shared opportunities, not Top 15 Tips and Tricks.

Sound like a direction you want to move toward? Let's go!
