Integrating Technology in the Classroom: It Takes More Than Just Having Computers

Technology integration is mandated in most schools today. However, for many teachers, a lack of personal experience with technology presents a challenge. There are many new ways to easily integrate technology into the classroom to extend student learning. There are several activities and websites that can help you integrate technology into your daily routine.

 Challenge students with online math problems. The Math Forums Math Problem of the Week offers word problems in five categories—math fundamentals, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus.
 Incorporate online news sources into discussions of current events. CNN and MSNBC are excellent places to start looking for national and international news
 Extend students geography awareness by challenging them to answer the five daily questions posed at GeoBee Challenge.
 Sign up for Steve Spangler’s Science Experiment of the Week. Each week, a new science experiment will be e-mailed to you.
 Introduce a word of the day. The Daily Buzzword at Word Central provides a word of the day and a related activity.

Focus Learning is a big believer in technology education. Our teachers have experience with integrating technology, and they strive to include technology-based activities and projects into their curriculum. Technology is incorporated in our classes at Focus learning because it enhances lessons and supports classroom instruction. It gives our students a sense of power and a chance to explore topics on a more advanced level.

“I don’t use technology in my classroom because it’s a buzzword or trend. I use it because connecting my kids with the world will prepare them for the future.”

Spring Rainbow Garden Pot Painting

Perfect for Mother's Day or end-of-year teacher's gift - rainbow painted pour pots!

What you will need:
1. A clean Terra Cotta pot (clay pots)
2. Colorful acrylic paints
3. Wax paper and newspaper to cover your work area

Steps:
First, cover your work area with newsprint and then cover your kids with a smock or old shirt. :)

Second, turn a clay pot (that's clean and dry) so it’s bottom-side up on a sheet of wax paper. The wax paper will allow the paint to dry and then come off clean so there's no newsprint stuck to your pot.

Third, squeeze the paint around the edge of the pot so it drips down the side. After you squeeze the paint, let the pot dry overnight and then remove it from the wax paper.

It should easily peel off but if the paint sticks, use a knife to trim around the edge of the pot.

Mental Math with Mr. Shervin!! + - x / =

Who? Grade 5 and 6 Students
What? Mental Math Class
Where? Focus Learning - 5809 Yonge St. North York, ON M2M 3T9
When? Saturdays from 9:30am-11:00am

What is mental math?  Students who practice mental math can make calculations in their minds.  It encourages actual understanding, not just memorization, and it is logical and fun!  Why is mental math important?   It is a life skill that can be useful both inside the classroom and outside the classroom.  What can students do with mental math?  They can calculate in their heads how much three tickets cost, how many minutes until the end of class, how much a bag of chips will cost with tax, and so much more.  What makes Mr. Shervin’s mental math class unique?  There are no pencils, paper, calculators or other aids used in this class, and students play a lot of games and activities to develop their mental math skills.  Students explore addition, subtraction, division and multiplication strategies.

It is almost impossible to get through a day without using math in some way.  Our world is full of numbers to handle and problems to solve, and studying mental math provides students with the tools to make sense of it all!  Come join Mr. Shervin on Saturdays from 9:30am-11:00am to improve your math skills!
