TENURE TRACK POSITION- BIG DATA/DATA SCIENCE
The Computer Science Department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, is seeking a full-time, academic year, Computer Science/Software Engineering, assistant or associate professor with a projected start date of 9-14-2015. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Duties include teaching undergraduate and master's level courses, expanding the Computer Science curriculum, and playing a key role in the development of an emphasis on data science, data management and data analytics. This position also provides opportunities to contribute to the University’s initiative on cybersecurity. Particular areas of focus include: data mining, data analytics, data science, and databases.
Specific assignments will depend on department needs. Outcomes assessment and Learn by Doing are important components of the university curriculum. Faculty members are also expected to engage in service activities at all levels of the university and to provide academic and professional advising to students. The successful candidate will be expected to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and administration.
Academic Preparation: An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent is required for appointment.
Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) will be considered, but must provide proof that the doctorate was completed prior to the start of the appointment.
Professional qualifications: Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to, or potential for, teaching excellence and scholarly activity at the university level, and continued professional development. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with students, staff and faculty from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Cal Poly is committed to the teacher-scholar model. As teachers, faculty are expected to exhibit strong pedagogic skills and to remain proficient and current in their disciplines. As scholars, faculty should be engaged in scholarly work that is of very high quality as evidenced by external peer review. As colleagues, it is appropriate for faculty to perform service activities at all levels of the University. Faculty should build collaborative relationships across the University and with colleagues at other universities.
Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated excellence in university level teaching and research (commensurate with time since degree), experience with laboratory-based instruction, industrial experience, and willingness to teach in multiple areas of the undergraduate curriculum, with emphasis on databases/big data/data science, experience working in a multidisciplinary setting, along with knowledge and experience in a related field.
Cal Poly's Computer Science Department offers Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Software Engineering, and a Master of Science degree in Computer Science. Also, the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering departments jointly offer a B.S. degree in Computer Engineering.
Cal Poly emphasizes "Learn by Doing", which involves extensive lab work and projects in support of theoretical knowledge. The Computer Science Department maintains an array of modern computing facilities and specialized labs for instructional and faculty support. Cal Poly is currently developing a unique emphasis in the area of “big data” and “data science” with a first of its kind cross disciplinary minor program in Data Science slated to start in 2015-2016 academic year. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in this multi-disciplinary initiative that constitutes a university-wide priority.
