According to the Aviation Safety Network (ASN), which records all air crashes and incidents reported around the world, 2017 was the safest year in aviation history!

There were just 10 fatal accidents involving commerical flights last year, resulting in 44 deaths. This is down from 16 fatal accidents and 302 deaths in 2016. Furthermore, none of 2017's fatalities involved a passenger jet.

Business jets are set to outperform all other certificated general aviation aircraft types in the USA over the next 20 years, according to a new forecast published by the Federal Aviation Administration.

It predicts that although the average annual growth rate for the whole general aviation sector, which includes traditional business jets, turboprops, fixed-wing piston aircraft and helicopters, will be 0.1% in the period to 2037, the business jet fleet will grow at an average rate of 2.3%, arriving at respective totals of 213,400 and 22,000.

Turbine aircraft as a whole will also perform better than piston-powered types, it says, with the US inventory expected to climb from 23,400 in 2017 to more than 34,600 in 20 years, an annual average growth rate of 1.9% over the period. Turboprops will grow by a more modest 1.4% a year, with the fleet totaling 12,600 in 2037, says the FAA.

US air taxi operator Linear Air is planning to expand its online charter offering, in an effort to exploit the growing popularity of small propeller-driven aircraft among US regional travellers.

“This sector is growing rapidly as increasing numbers of people are looking for low-cost, flexible aircraft to address their travel needs,” says Bill Herp, founder and chief executive of the Concord, Massachusetts-based company

Launched in 2013, Linear Air’s online marketplace and booking platform consists of 650 operators and over 1,700 small turbine and piston-engined aircraft. These include the company’s own Eclipse 500 very light jets, Cessna Caravan single-engined turboprops and Cirrus SR22 piston-singles, which are now the fastest-growing fleet in the US air taxi market, Herp says.

A new torpedo upgrade that will fundamentally change the way US Navy airmen hunt submarines is on track to seek approval to begin low-rate initial production later this year, Boeing and Navy officials say on 28 March.

The Lockheed Martin High Altitude Anti-submarine warfare Weapon Capability (HAAWC) is in the midst of safe separation tests from the Boeing P-8A Poseidon. A guided flight test is planned in late Fiscal 2017, allowing the programme potentially to order 140 high-altitude torpedoes total over the first two lots.

Strathaven Airfield is a small traditional grass airfield located just outside of Strathaven in South Lanarkshire, Scotland.

The airfield is one of the oldest civilian airfields in Scotland and was founded in the early 1950's by Group Captain George Pinkerton, the first man to shoot down a German aircraft over British soil in World War 2. The airfield has seen varied use over the years and is currently used mainly by microlight aircraft.

The Gatwick Aviation Museum has a unique collection of British aircraft from the "golden age" of British aircraft manufacture. From post war to cold war, this museum clearly shows that timeline in aviation terms.

The main hangar features the De Havilland Sea Vixen, Hawker Hunter, BAe Harrier and the English Electric Lightning.
