POWERFUL PLATFORM FOR SOCIAL CHANGE ...after the applause when you go home and wake up the next morning, Will You Be Part of the Problem or Solution! First World Theatre Ensemble is the resident theatre at Community
Education Center in University City, Philadelphia, home of "Sojourner," and founded in December 2001 by Barrymore nominated Zuhairah
McGill, Executive / Artistic Director.
Having produced over 15 full productions, one-act festivals, reading series, and special events, First World Theatre Ensemble (FWTE) strives to provide social awareness
and change through theatrical productions and outreach. Each play
produced by First World Theatre Ensemble addresses social issues that
range in scope from local to global, and is paired with an organization
whose work relates to the social themes of the play. A portion of the proceeds from each play produced is donated to the designated
organization. We also inform our audiences about and connect them to the
designated organizations via FWTE's Talk-Back Sundays, First Word
Playbill, and our website. Through our outreach partnerships, First
World Theatre Ensemble is better able to respond to the needs of and
provide direct support for audience members actually affected by the
issues addressed in the plays.
Philadelphia is home to hundreds
of theatre companies, many of which are committed to socially conscious
plays. FWTE distinguishes itself by bridging the gap between the
theatre we produce and the change it seeks to create. In its outreach
partnerships, First World Theatre Ensemble provides the vehicle with
which our audiences can give back to the community.
Theatre's goal is to not only make our audiences aware of the impact of
social ills, issues, and injustices, but at the same time allowing them
to be a part of the platform for change as we bring light to those
As one of Greater Philadelphia’s few
professional African American theatre companies, we invite YOU to join
in this resurgence in Black theatre.
