Firsthand Weather

Matthew Kaufman from Tech Urchin writes a guest article on Firsthand Weather about drones, and how they can be used to collect weather data to improve forecast accuracy. It's actually really cool so please take a couple of minutes to read it. Please share! -Matthew
Guest Writer Matthew Kaufman - Tech Urchin: Acquiring data in dangerous weather circumstances has traditionally been done from the ground and often involves a person to man. We have seen armored vehicles, weighted down, and driving into the middle of vicious tornados. Far too many storm chasers have died in an effort to keep the locals …

There has been an article circulating on the internet these last few days, warning the public to stay away from sites like Firsthand Weather. That was definitely not the first article like that, but this time, I decided to write a response and post it on the site. Please take a few minutes to read it. I don't think you'll regret it! -Matthew
There has been an article circulating on the internet over the last few days basically telling people that they need to stay away from weather websites or pages that are run by amateur weather forecasters. I would assume that they are referring to any weather source that is run by individuals who do not at …

Please read and share!! Supercells, capable of producing tornadoes, will develop in Kansas and Nebraska during the afternoon tomorrow! The threat will then shift eastward into Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois later into the evening and overnight hours. Please read this article for more details! -Matthew
I’m going to keep this update rather brief since it’s getting late, but I wanted to give everyone across the Central Plains a big heads up on the potential severe weather outbreak tomorrow. A shortwave trough is currently located in the western United States and will move over the Central Plains during the day tomorrow. …

Have you heard a lot of talk about El Niño, but you really don't know what it is? In this article, I explain what an El Niño is, and what causes it.

Just a few quick things. . .

1) I'm finally finishing my article on what El Nino is and what causes it to occur. This article has actually been somewhat of a challenge to write because I'm trying to make it very easy to understand, yet I don't want to leave out any important details. I'm going to include a video with the article, which I'm going to be making sometime tomorrow. Along with the article and video, I'm going to provide links for those that are interested in doing further research on El Nino. After all of that, you all should have a solid understanding of El Nino.

2) There is an article that has been circulating on the internet over the past few days warning the public to stay away from weather sites such as Firsthand Weather. I am going to write a response to that article, explaining that by keeping our focus on putting out accurate and quality forecasts and finding the best way to get those forecasts out to the public has lead Firsthand Weather down a successful road thus far. On the other hand, I will be addressing the issue of amateur sites putting out unrealistic forecasts, but why we shouldn't be too concerned about them as long as our focus stays on growing our own organizations. The author of the article was probably well-intentioned, but this gives me a good opportunity to address an important issue. This will be posted publicly on the site, so everyone will be able to read it! -Matthew

The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded parts of Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri to a high risk. This upgrade was made because of the hurricane-force winds that are expected later tonight. Winds over 100+ mph are very possible across this region and a widespread damaging wind threat is likely across this region.

Explosive supercell development will occur across Nebraska over the next few hours with a few supercells possibly developing in Kansas. These will be the areas that will have the highest risk of seeing tornadoes, some of which could be strong. This, in itself, will be a dangerous situation.

While the tornado threat will not be non-existent late tonight into the overnight hours, these storms are going to likely cluster up and develop into a powerful derecho. This is why I am concerned about a potentially widespread damaging wind event later tonight.

Please refer to my earlier updates and map as my thoughts on the tornado threat risk area have not changed. Please SHARE this update to get as many people warned as possible. I'll continue to keep everyone updated. -Matthew
