A new three-dimensional atlas of the developing human brain has been made available in the hope that it can help researchers develop new medicines for diseases. Called the ‘BrainSpan Atlas of the Developing Human Brain’, this new online portal incorporates both gene activity and expression along with anatomical reference atlases and neuroimaging data of the human brain. Brain changes associated with casual marijuana use in young adults: More 'joints' equal more damage -The size and shape of two brain regions involved in emotion and motivation may differ in young adults who smoke marijuana at least once a week, according to a new study. The findings suggest that recreational marijuana use may lead to previously unidentified brain changes, and highlight the importance of research aimed at understanding the long-term effects of low to moderate marijuana use on the brain. #Penicillin redux: Rearming proven warriors for the 21st century -Drug-resistant bacteria like MRSA are hard to treat because so many antibiotics are ineffective against them. A team of researchers has shown a new way to reclaim the power of penicillin and similar drugs against so-called "superbugs." "In the United States every year, around 100,000 patients die of bacteria-induced infections," a researcher said. "And the problem is increasing because bacteria are building resistance. It's a really, really big problem, not only for individual patients, but also for society." Read more: http://ow.ly/vNxqB

Virus-fighting genes linked to mutations in cancer - Researchers have found a major piece of genetic evidence that confirms the role of a group of virus-fighting genes in cancer development. Our understanding of the biological processes that cause cancer is limited. UV light and smoking are two well-understood cancer-causing processes. Exposure to either of these processes causes distinguishable patterns of genetic damage, or 'signatures', on the genome that can lead to cancer. All cancer-causing processes leave their own distinct imprint or signature, on the genomes of cancer cells. More: http://ow.ly/vKFqP

Did you know? We are about 1 cm taller in the morning than in the evening. The cartilage between our bones gets compressed by standing, sitting and other daily activities as the day goes on, making us just a little shorter at the end of the day than at the beginning. #amazinghumanbody
