Barbapapa at 45: bon anniversaire to much-loved French cartoon clan

Barbapapa, the splodgy pink cartoon character beloved by French schoolchildren and translated into 30 languages, has reached middle age.

The characters – Barbapapa is the father but also the name of the wider cartoon family – were created on 19 May 1970 by French architect and writer Annette Tison and her American partner Talus Taylor, who died last month in Paris aged 82.

Kids Exposed To Multiple Languages Are Better Communicators: Study

Children who grow up in homes where multiple languages are spoken tend to become effective communicators, a University of Chicago study says. Researchers say that such children learn to pay closer attention when someone speaks, because they have had to learn more than one language.

Such children are better at "observing the social patterns and allegiances that are formed based on language usage," a researcher said.

What your smile says about where you’re from

If you come from a country of immigrants, you’re more likely to crack a friendly smile on the street. That’s the conclusion of a new study, which may explain why Americans beam more than their Chinese and Russian counterparts.

Scientists have known for decades that societies have their own unwritten rules about when it’s appropriate to smile, frown, or get angry. These rules are part of a country’s “emotion culture,” the norms that influence how and when people express whether they’re pleased or upset.

Researchers often study these differences geographically, finding that the United States and the West tend to be more expressive than China and the East. But those geographical studies overlook the important role migration played in shaping emotion culture, says Paula Niedenthal, a psychologist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Game of Thrones: 8 fun facts about the Valyrian language

In the first two seasons of Game of Thrones, we heard the language of the horse-riding warrior Dothraki people (and here are seven fun facts about that language). The next two seasons introduced Valyrian, a group of languages worked out to a much greater degree than is evident on the show by language creator David Peterson. Here are eight fun facts about Valyrian for you to ponder as the new season gets underway.

Emoji the 'fastest growing language' in the UK, says linguistics expert

Are you feeling a little bit :-( today? Or is something or someone making you :-)?

Or perhaps you are more ¯\(ツ)

Whatever your emotion today, there's most likely an emoticon for it.

Where there's an emoticon, there's usually an emoji - where the sentiment is expressed as a tiny colourful picture instead of a text-based symbol. In some cases these symbols are used to mean something rude, like how Instagrammers use the aubergine emoji.

I don't have emoji's. I'm the only person on Google+ to use the age-old smileys.

«Lily - the Camera that Follows You» vous suit, vous filme ou vous prend en photo, selon l'ordre donné.

Ce drone fonctionne selon un système ingénieux: vous portez un petit émetteur sur vous, l'appareil s'active et vous suit, vous filme ou vous prend en photo, selon l'ordre donné.

Léger, il suffit de le lancer pour que la machine se mette en marche et vous talonne.
