This is awesome. The Shreddies example is priceless!

http://www.ted.com/talks/rory_sutherland_life_lessons_from_an_ad_man?language=en
Advertising adds value to a product by changing our perception, rather than the product itself. Rory Sutherland makes the daring assertion that a change in perceived value can be just as satisfying as what we consider “real” value — and his conclusion has interesting consequences for how we look at life.

Google Webmaster Tools feature request

Adding an exception rule for Disavow Tool rules. For example, if a webmaster wants to disavow everything on a domain they can use:

domain:example.com

This works great, except with free hosting were some subdomains may be good (e.g. official blog owned and operated by the main website) while the majority of the subdomains is spam. Consider blogspot.com or wordpress.com.

A possible solution is to manually keep track of all subdomains on the freehost linking the main website and disavow every subdomain one by one on subdomain pattern OR to disavow the whole freehost domain - including the official blog. These two options are the current best practice.

However, this can be made a lot easier and simpler if webmasters can add an exception rule. For example,

domain:example.com
except:good.example.com

This then disavows everything on domain example.com EXCEPT anything on good.example.com.

Obviously this is an advanced feature and you can choose one of many different patterns to be used in the disavow file to clearly distinguish between exception rules and disavow rules. A few suggestions:

except:good.example.com
allow:good.example.com
-domain:good.example.com
etc.

An additional bonus of adding these exception rules is that webmasters can also add their own websites as exception rules and make sure that they never get disavowed in their own disavow file (this is assuming that exception rules are prioritized over disavow rules when being processed).

The feature request includes that the exception rules can be applied to both domain/hostname and URL patterns.

Love to hear your thoughts...

Show your support with +1 for the feature request.

Usually making things easy it's always a good solution, but I think this tool is an exception. I thought about this several times and I could never come up with something that would justify making it easier. Mostly if there is already a way to achieve that purpose. Also remember, this is not a tool for the common webmaster, that's why it's not even linked from the tools central.

An Amazingly Wonderful Development for the Dolphins of Taiji

JAZA Cuts Ties with the Dolphin Killers of Taiji.

Sea Shepherd has been opposing the slaughter of the dolphins since 2003 in a campaign we have called Operation Infinite Patience.

Finally today our patience has paid off.

The Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums (JAZA) has voted to no longer purchase dolphins from the killers of Taiji.

Last month, JAZA was given a choice by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) to either stop purchasing dolphins from Taiji or be permanently suspended from WAZA.

JAZA made the decision to stay with WAZA

After years of pressure from Sea Shepherd, the Dolphin Project, Earth Island Institute and others, WAZA ruled that the Taiji hunt was "cruel," and made the decision that that none of its members can purchase dolphins from the dolphin butchers of Taiji.

In a letter to WAZA, the Japanese group, which comprises 89 zoos and 63 aquariums, said it would abide by WAZA's decision.

"It is our wish at JAZA to remain as a member of WAZA," chair Kazutoshi Arai said in a letter addressed to WAZA President Lee Ehmke.

“This is a landmark decision by JAZA,” said Sea Shepherd founder Captain Paul Watson. “Will it end the slaughter? We do not know yet. But what it will do is undermine the market for capturing dolphins at Taiji. The captures are where the money is. Killing dolphins for meat alone cannot sustain the dolphin drive. This is a significant blow to the butchers of Taiji and wonderful news for the dolphins in the waters around Japan.”

Sea Shepherd Cove Guardians will continue to monitor Taiji to see what happens next season. Taiji will remain under the international spotlight until the killing is permanently ended.

‪#‎BREAKING‬: Sea Shepherd Announces Operation Sleppid Grindini, Faroe Islands Pilot Whales Defense Campaign, 2015
Sea Shepherd will return to the Faroe Islands in June 2015 with a new campaign to defend against the on-going slaughter of protected pilot whales.
Led by Sea Shepherd Global CEO, Capt. Alex Cornelissen, the campaign will have the organization's strongest sea presence in the region to date. The MV Bob Barker and The MV Sam Simon will be joined by the The MV Brigitte Bardot, and supported by a passionate team of onshore volunteers.
“Sleppid grindini” is the traditional order used by the grind foreman to call off a pilot whale hunt. It literally means “set the whales free.”

Now the decade of work we put into NoSQL is available to everyone using GCP.  One way it shows that we've been working on this longer than anyone else: 99% read latency is 6ms vs ~300ms for other systems.
