In our house, we celebrate mid Winter - a dinner to honour the goddess and the seasons.. and then go for the compulsory Christmas thing to my mother.    I prefer the idea of keeping with the old ways -  the traditions of the land and the seasons.  In pre Christian times the returning of the light was celebrated right through from the Solstice to what is now the 6th January.   The Christian tradition took on these old ways as it was easier for people to be convinced by something they were already familiar with.

For me that is the most sincere time to be grateful for the turning of the seasons, the love of friends and family, the year that has past and the year that will come.

Gift giving isn't so important and certainly mass consumerism is a man made, nothing to do with any faith, travesty of modern days.   It is very hard not to buy into it, but when I start to hear Christmas songs being played in shops from the 1st November it becomes easier with each passing year to walk out of that shop and not return again.

Whatever holiday or tradition we honour, or try to escape from, I still love receiving cards from far flung places, taking out my Christmas tree decorations that I have bought on my travels which remind of friends far away or long passed, and putting together a special banquet as a once a year celebration.

I adore The Artists' Way - I read an article about it in a magazine maybe 15 years ago, and went straight out and ordered it (had to go to the shop in those days to do it) and it took 3 months to arrive from America cos no-one had even heard of it.   I started working through it the next day and wrote an album of songs over the course of it and left the job that I hated.  I've been working as a professional musician since and still do Morning Pages - not all the time, but when I get derailed it's only a matter of time before I climb back on and carry on with the practice again.  Totally life changing.
I'm so delighted to see your blog about Julia, Corinne, and know that people are still having the joy of discovering her for the first time.
