Buying a bass player a gift can be a tricky thing. The first thing to consider is the level of the player. Buying a gift for a beginner is the most straightforward because you most likely will be looking at budget basses and accessories. For more experienced players it can get a little more involved but I put together some bass gift ideas that hopefully will help.

Willie Weeks is one of the most respected bassists of all time. Willie does it with great tone, perfect time, and an uncanny ability to know exactly what to play and when for any given tune. The perfect pocket player, Willie has the chops to play almost anything, but it's how he uses his skills that sets him apart from most other bass players. He can hold a tight, solid groove or knock out a great tasteful solo.

There are so many flatwound string brands available now that it can be a little overwhelming. In general all flatwounds will give you a warmer, more mellow tone than roundwounds but there are differences with each brand.
Although the basic design for flats is the same, there are several small differences in the construction of the string that can have a large impact on the tone and feel of each flatwound set.

Verdine White was a sophisticated funk bassist with great technique. His work with Earth, Wind & Fire is full of highly creative finger style funk lines that draw from many different styles and genres. Verdine's melodic, musical approach and fast, complex playing influenced many funk bassists to come. Verdine used Fender Jazz, Precision and Telecaster Basses for most of his career.

Rick Danko provided solid and inventive bass playing for The Band from 1968 to 1977. His tone was deep and heavy but he played with great feel and precision. Danko also sang lead on many of The Band's most beloved recordings and wrote several of their songs. Danko used a Fender Precision Bass on The Band's early, classic work before switching to other basses later on.

Tim Bogart's lead bass style and bombastic solos were a huge part of Vanilla Fudge's sound. Often singing lead, Tim filled the band's heavy, psychedelic rock with a flurry of notes. His tone was way out front in the mix, which was unusual for the time and influenced many bass players since. Tim favored a Fender Precision Bass with a maple fingerboard.
