How can you involve end-users of Alternative and Augmentative Communication in the design proces of innovative new technologies? Just do it. These people cannot speak anymore nevertheless can have a voice in the debate about brain-computer interfaces as this example shows.

Can you be happy when you are completely paralyzed? When you can think and feel, but can only blink your eyes? Surprisingly, most people with the locked-in syndrome can be happy. What is devastating is when you are locked out of society.

Can crowdfunding projects bring some innovation in the field of assitive technology? Here's the story of Tempt, a graffiti artist with ALS, who is locked-in. He uses his eyes to put graffiti on the walls after 7 years of paralysis. He uses EyeWriter, something that was put together by the Not Impossible Foundation.

Tempt himself wrote about this: “That was the first time I’ve drawn anything in seven years. I feel like I had been held under water, and someone finally reached down, and pulled my head up so I could take a breath.”

When you're a researcher in Leiden working on brainy things you should become a member of the Leiden Institute for Brain & Cognition. So another new affiliation.... This membership gives access to a network of experts and to facilities like the EEG lab and 7Tesla MRI scanner http://www.libc-leiden.nl/

Want to have your concepts about disability or autism shattered in your face?

Here's Amanda Baggs.

Amanda is autistic. She does not speak. She makes funny movements. You'd probably feel a bit awkward in her presence. You'd feel like helping her to communicate. You'd feel like helping her be less confused. You'd feel like including her more in our world.

Yet, she claims, it is us who are confused. It is us who do not speak her language. And.... sadly.. it is us who exclude her by pointing out how abnormal she is. It is us that disable her by forcing to use words instead of her natural interaction with the world.

Op het Nederlands Film Festival wordt een documentaire vertoond over Wim, die al 18 jaar locked-in is. Een bijzondere en vooral heel humoristische man met evenzo bijzondere familie. Gaat dat zien!
